Sex Education - Do you know the laws in your state?

I thought it was still the norm to have parents sign permission slips to allow their children to receive sex education in public schools. Obviously, I was wrong. Only three states, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, require parental consent, and while the parents can opt out in most states, how are they to know it’s even being taught??

I had to get permission slips signed when I was in school, and I went in Maryland. Do you know if that changed?
 
And… how are they to know it is staying in one class? I had several teachers in highschool who felt the need to educate the class about “Safe” sex, Abortion and Homosexuality on a regular basis, heck, my Spanish teacher talked with kids about sex all the time at her desk, to join the conversation all you had to do was pull up a chair, for the Gloria Steinem lecture.

I can’t tell you how many times I debated my English teacher in class about Abortion “rights” She didn’t like me very much, but I always got A’s, and remained respectful, so what could she do. She gave us an example of an instructional speech. Guess what the speech was? Let’s just say the prop was putting a condom on a bananna.

My official health/ sex ed teacher was the only Catholic teacher in the school.

I homeschool my kids for now.

It looks like it has. I remember getting a slip signed in elementary school for the “health” education but I can’t remember if I had to have one signed in highschool. I thought I did - I was almost positive. Parents are allowed to opt-out in MD, but no consent is required. 😦

I’m pregnant with my first and I hope not to have to use public schools. I imagine not all kids tell their parents what is being discussed in health class. It’s good to know that your child’s school notifies you. Do you have to approve, or is it just a notification? I’m curious since the chart I linked to lists NJ as not needing parental consent. If one state is wrong, more may be wrong.

I honestly can not say what the public schools require as my son never was in public school.
The Catholic schools here in NJ or at least the one my son has attended and attends require notification and parents can have their kids opt out if they so wish.
Also in regards to kids not telling parents what is being taught…what happened to parents asking the teachers…I know I have always done this if I had questions.
That chart also shows that schools (public) in NJ can have parents opt out based on religious reasons.

Forgot to say CONGRATS on the upcoming addition to the family.
 
What the Catholic parents do where I live is go the school PAC meetings and find out when controversial sex education topics are being discussed. Then we make dentist or doctor appts for our kids and keep them from being exposed to the filth of immorality that the public education system calls sex education.

Now that our Canadian government has legalized gay marriage, our sex education program will most likely teach the kids how to do it, “gay style” in graphic detail. Unless the teacher happens to be Christian with an abstinence viewpoint. But they are a rare find in the public school system. Unfortuately, we do not have a Catholic school here, our town is too small to support that.

You are right. Parents need to be proactive. I was thinking partly about the fact that the schools are pushing this stuff on our kids younger and younger. I wonder how many parents would think to ask if sex ed is discussed in 5th or 6th grade. I agree that we need to be on top of what our kids are being taught. No question there. I am just surprised that so few states notify parents ahead of time.

Ahh…dont be surprised…this is the PUBLIC schools that we are speaking about 🙂
Sex Ed or Family Life is started in 5th grade at my sons old school but they did not discuss reproduction STD’s etc. till 8th grade
 
My son is in 4th grade in Massachusetts schools. I just found out that I will need to write to the school to opt him out starting in 5th grade. I would much prefer an opt in program where each parent would have to sign permission for them to go to these classes. Also are there abstinence only home schooling programs that one can follow along with. I would definitely like to propose this at my parish for all the public school kids whose parents choose to opt them out.
