Sex in Heaven, and the Carnality of Adam and Eve

**Throughout history, Christians have asked themselves whether there will be sex in Heaven. The Muslims emphatically say yes, while most Christians have followed the belief of St. Amphonsus Liguori that there will be all kinds of pleasures, but no carnality in Heaven. However, thinkers such as Peter Kreeft have brought up the question anew. Even the justly renowned *This Rock *magazine has once said that they didn’t know what “role Jesus’s masculinity plays in Paradise”, leaving the issue on that note.

On the contrary however, is it not clear from Genesis 1:30 that carnality entered the world after the Fall? The animals became carnal when they started eating each other; man became carnal when he ate the forbidden fruit.**

**Let me try to explain how I see this issue. I wrote a lot of notes down last night on Genesis 1-3 and have to get through all the scribble now that I’m at the computer…

The Catechism of the Council of Trent, issued by St. Pope Pius V, and praised by Pope after Pope over the years, even by the present Pope, states in its chapter on the Sacrament of Matrimony that the sole purpose of sexuality in Adam and Eve’s original preternatural state was that of procreation. But wait? Does that mean there was neither love, nor pleasure, associated with the act? The answer comes when we connect the thought of the Tridentine Fathers with that of the early Church Fathers, and the Jewish interpretation of Genesis. If Adam and Eve had sexual relations in the Garden, then the pleasure and love of the act would have had a true purpose given by God, even if it was a purpose used primarily as a means to an end (children). The key to the Tridentine Catechism is the common sense interpretation of Genesis 4:1 by the Church Fathers: Adam and Eve had relations only AFTER the fall; otherwise, Cain would have been conceived before the Fall! The purpose of the function of sexuality which our first parents had in the Garden couldn’t come to fruition until they had fallen and learned how it feels to be carnal. This is not to deny that there is a spiritual element involved here (see 1 Corinthians 6:13,18); the new Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes Pius XII on the spiritual nature of sexuality. But carnality is essential to the act as well. God created Adam and Eve with foreknowledge of the fall. **

To clarify what I’ve written, let me quote Pius XI, *Casti Connubii *(31/12/1930)

1. **This mutual molding of husband and wife, this determined effort to perfect each other, can in a very real sense, as the Roman Catechism teaches, be said to be the chief reason and purpose of matrimony, provided matrimony be looked at not in the restricted sense as instituted for the proper conception and education of the child, but more widely as the blending of life as a whole and the mutual interchange and sharing thereof. **

That is NOW however. Heaven is different. How can the Muslims not see that the meaning of sexual arousal cannot be separated from the carnal, the flesh. This is what Adam and Eve realized (Gen. 3:7)

I assume you mean those who have no knowledge of the Bible? can’t possibly be “bible-christians”

I hope to highest heaven there will NOT be sex in the hereafter! That’s the last I want to worry about in paradise. We are finally going to be spiritual as opposed to carnal; therefore, who needs to eat, drink, or have intercourse? Even when we get glorified bodies, things are just going to be totally different than they were on earth. We can finally just be at peace!

Jesus ate after receiving a glorified body, but I agree he didn’t have to.

FYI, this is heresy. Humans are created body and soul and our being and nature is body and soul. We will not be spiritual beings until the end of time. We will be Resurrected and live forever body and soul.

I agree we will be creatures of body and soul after the judgment. But --and I think you’ll agree-- we will not be engaged in sexual activity. Sexual procreation is for ‘time’. Eternity is timeless.

Surely if we do not marry in heaven, we won’t have sex. And don’t the nuptial vows say, “until death do us part?” So once we’re dead (or our spouse is) we are no longer married. And of course if we are not married we are chaste and continent.

Who knows?

Maybe in heaven marriage is not a pre-requisite to chaste sex as it is on earth.

We won’t know until we’ve crossed that threshold. If I make it to heaven, God willing, I dare not complain about how he made it, lest he send me to the other side .
