Last night, something really odd happened to me. As I was laying down, it was like I was in this half-asleep/semi-asleep (not sure) mode (I am not totally sure, it was really odd) and I starting having these lustful/sexual thoughts. It was then like I fully woke up and realized the thoughts that had been in my mind and I was suddenly worried had I fallen into the sin of lust.

It happened over a space of mere minutes (I think…admittedly, time can seem strange in sleep/half-asleep mode, but I could kind of tell the time based on the television channel I watching), but I was worried that I committed lust or something.

EDIT: It was weird because when the thoughts were originally crossing my mind, the sinfulness or anything did not really cross either. It was not until I was awake (or fully awake) that I got rid of them and was then worried about sin issues.

Like any other normal person, when the conscious mind shuts down, all kinds of stuff comes up.

It is all in how we handle this “temptation” for if no illicit sexual activity was actually carried out no sin was committed.

When I have been snapped awake in the middle of some strongly erotic dream, a brief session of prayer, especially a few “Hail Mary’s” seems to defuse the potential for falling into the sin of lust.

Keep praying!

Also on this year’s Tiber Swim Team.

I don’t think it was a sin. In that state of consciousness we are not fully in control of our thoughts. Same with sexual dreams. Now, if after you were awake you continued to dwell on those thoughts, that would be sinful. This has happened to me before, and I call on St. Michael the Archangel to get rid of the thoughts. I think most people experience this type of thing at one time or another, even the most saintly. Many of the Saints did battle with impure thoughts.

Lust is my biggest issue. I left the Church for a while and viewed pornography several times a day, I also engaged in pre-marital sex with a condom regularly. I came back to the church just recently and I am concerned about how it will work out with this girl now. She won’t understand if I tell her I don’t want to have sex anymore.

If she loves you, yes she will. Just because you’ve gotten so far off the track doesn’t mean there is no way back. Pray for hope, because that’s the opposite of despair.

This is why you have to build up a reaction that is innately and immediately negative to these kinds of thoughts and images, not a secondary after delectation reaction against it, but one that is immediate against.

Also the more you become forgetful of these images because of lack of experience with them the less trouble you will have in this area.

You have to pray vs. diabolical temptation because that normally becomes a factor with anyone seeking holiness and freedom from these things. This half awake state is a sign of that.

The St. Michael prayer is best, on rising and sleeping in such a case. So three Aves, and one St. Michael minimum, morning, evening.

I recommend confessing these and all impure dreams or half awake states, and if your confessor gives trouble, tell him that whether it is a sin or not, it is an imperfection, it is something you wish to and feel best to confess.

A person needs a clean mind and soul before Communion, of anything carnal, and Confession will take care of this and any even minimal volitional delectation, as well as help you gain the grace needed to overcome this. Carnality and sensuality are the enemy here, and acquiring a mind that is free from their slavery.

Ave Maria, gratia plena!

It happens to everyone. I view them as a temptation. Just so you don’t act on them I don’t see how its a sin. Sometimes I think Satan plays hardest when we sleep
