Okay, so I just realized something the other day. I was an altar server for the Bishop for the Mass at my college for the President, who was to be inaugurated that day. After the Mass, I went to the Bishop and shook his hand, saying that it was a pleasure serving for him.

Was this right? Is it okay to offer to shake a Bishop’s hand, or is it wrong unless he asks for a handshake? Also, was I supposed to kiss his ring, or do something else special?

I think you did ok. If I remember it correctly, kissing a bishop’s ring is to show our obedience to the Church; however, I don’t think you must kiss the ring everytime you meet a bishop.

I think most bishops discourage the kissing of the ring these days.
