I’ve seen this hypothesis before, although not in college & graduate school when I was earning a B.A. in English literature & then a master’s degree in secondary education in English. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the possibility of Shakespeare’s Catholicism has been ignored by scholars only because many of them are anti-religious generally and especially anti-Catholic. However, my educated guess is that there is simply lack of evidence. Literary scholarship isn’t exactly an exact science, & I can assure you that it’s possible to read almost anything into Shakepseare - and it’s been done over & over again! Historical or biological research is a different matter, but again, the problem arises: there simply isn’t much known about the man himself. It’s an interesting theory, but I’m disinclined to believe it.

Um… didn’t Shakespeare live in England (which was all Catholic) BEFORE the “Reformation?”

The Protestant heresy began before Q. Elizabeth I came to the throne; Shakespeare’s life largely overlaps with hers. He died 1616.

Recently saw doc. ‘In Search of Shakespeare’ pbs.org/shakespeare/ where they showed that he’s family kept the ‘old faith’ so far, that government even found cahtolic confessions of faith in their house and they even moved from one city to another because of their faith. But it was still mostly he’s father. Will was apparently also wedded by a cahtolic minded anglican, but they said when Will left for London he did not care much about old faith, because the biggest actors troup was sponsored by gov and showed anti-cahtolic playes.
After the 2nd series i stopped watching because of that (there are 4 parts altogether). But maybe should continue, maybe he changes.
I can vaguely remember that there may have been catholic influenses in his later works, but from these doc. we can be sure that he had a catholic upbringing.
