Shakespeare, the Catholic Explained by Joseph Pearce and Marlowe the Spy

Joseph Pearce’s material on William Shakespeare explains that hard evidence that he was indeed a Catholic.

I was listening to the seventh episode on one of the series that was produced on EWTN and it explained the roll that Christopher Marlowe, author of the Play, ***Doctor Faustus, ***had in persecuting Catholic priest. It was very moving in explaining the perils of that time for Catholic priests.

Christopher Marlowe was a spy who had gone to France to spy on the Catholics there.

When the Catholic priests trained in France and then went to England to minister the Catholics there they were quickly captured on arrival in England or shortly afterward. This led to conclusion that there must have been a spy who infiltrated the Catholic community there in France.

(These captured Catholic priests were then Hung, Drawn, and Quartered. They were first hanged but cut down just before death so that they could witness how they were then Drawn, that is they had a knife thrust into abdomen which was then drawn down so that his entrails could be removed destroyed in front of him by being boiled or by being stomped on, and then their heart was removed so that it was the last thing they saw before passing out and dying. Then the body was quartered into four parts. )

After these multiple tragic events, during which Christopher Marlowe was inexplicably absent from English society, Cambridge University was unwilling to grant him his earned degree because of these unexplained absences. Then, Queen Elizabeth’s Privy Council intervened on his behalf, saying that Marlowe had “done her majesty good service” in “matters touching the benefit of the country.”

It was evident that Marlowe worked as a spy for the crown, by infiltrating Catholic communities in France. His Play, ***Doctor Faustus, ***seems to have a certain autobiographical aspect of a person having sold his soul to the Devil.

Has anyone had any experience in using these for evangelization ?

Read the ***Doctor Faustus, ***the play’s Summary of Plot Overview by Sparks or Text of Play.
