Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilali is the imam of Sydney’s Lakemba Mosque and the Mufti of Australia. What is the relative importance of those two positions with regard to Muslims in Australia?

Before I read the article I assumed that his position would be similar to American televangelists who sometimes become embarrassing in their excess. Pat Robertson springs to mind.

I would hate for all American Christians to be held accountable for Pat Robertson’s outbursts. But televangelists are largely self appointed who have gained a popular following. Are they comparable to the positions that Sheik Hilali holds?

My understanding of a mufti was a mufti is an Islamic scholar, who helps explain and preach the Islamic law.
This mufti in Australia is misrepresenting the Islamic religion as many Muslim leaders here in Australia have called for his resignation in light of all the statements he has made lately.
The latest one, that Muslims deserve to live in Australia more than Australia’s first settlers, the convicts, as Muslims “want” to live here, as opposed to convicts being “forced” to live here, is a terrible insult to generations of us descended from convicts, me being one.
If I didn’t “want” to live here after being born here, I would emmigrate.
He is a disgrace to all religions, all people, all commonsense, all nations, especially the ISlamic faith he is employed to represent.

Sounds like Pat Robertson has met his match.😃

He’s an American Protestant minister who has said some pretty ‘controversial’ things over the years.😃
Wow, I just had a quick look at that site.
Yep, he sure sounds like this Australian mufti.
Does Pat Robertson have supporters?
Our mufti here has supporters from his mosque in Sydney who are saying he hasn’t said anything wrong.

The sheik is the senior head of the muslim religion here in Australia, so pretty much the representative of them.
Some muslims have said they are embarrassed and do not support him, but on the whole, they have been pretty quiet about the whole thing, only saying he has been ‘misinterpreted’ once again, which after the 4th time now, is now quite tiresome.
I know some muslims and one of my really good friends is one, so I personally dont have anything against them, but I just dont like the way this whole episode has taken shape with the mufti and he has been allowed to get away with these outbursts again and again
For the record, one of his ‘outbursts’ was that the holocaust didnt happen, now for someone to say that, its discusting and shows no sign of respect.

Does Pat Robertson have supporters?
Sadly, yes. The average audience for his daily television show (The 700 Club) tops 850,000 viewers.

This too is very saddening. I don’t know what we can do except pray for them.

It seems all religions produce crackpot leaders. The Orthodox Jews who attended Iran’s Holocaust denial conference are getting an unfriendly reception back in the U.S., but even they seem to have loyal supporters.

The Mufti of Australia is a position appointed by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils. Although it is not known just how representative this organisation is, it puts itself forward as being representative of local Muslims (without much protest from among the Muslim community) and has the authority to appoint a religious position, that of Mufti, which is similar to the position of Cardinal Pell for Australia, only on behalf of Muslims instead of Catholics. In other words - a respected religious leader whose pronouncements on the practice of Islam and the faithful’s correct Islamic conduct in the world are to be listened to by the faithful. He is not self-appointed like Pat Robertson so what he says is not so easily dismissed.

According to Wikipedia:
A mufti (Arabic: مفتى‎) is an Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law (Sharia), capable of issuing fataawa (plural of “fatwa”).

Here is a link to an older story, from the Middle East Media Research Institute. of what he said in a 2004 statement, in which he calls for a jihad against Israel and praises martyrdom for Islam saying "“Also, whoever carries out a martyrdom [operation] is a pure Shahid and one of the men of Paradise. Moreover, he stands at the head of the Shahids.”

Enough young Muslim men in Australia listen to him to make him someone to be wary of. Remember the London Underground bombers were of the same sort of background - sons of those who had fled the Middle East but brought all their customs and hatreds with them.

He is being urged to stand for Parliament (and this after his latest pronouncement so someone must agree with him). One can only hope he is not elected but it would certainly give us a better idea of how he is really regarded by Australian Muslims.

Well, here is another kook urging young children to be martyrs for Islam. But my question would be this. Why don’t these guys live by example and go blow themselves up? Why don’t they show others how to become martyrs but instead brainwash others to do it for them. Such cowardice…don’t they want the 77 virgins or however many they’re supposed to have?

Now they want to run Moslem candidates in the elections in March.
Muslim community considers candidates for NSW election

The Islamic Friendship Association says the Muslim community will consider putting up candidates for the New South Wales election in south-western Sydney seats, including Premier Morris Iemma’s seat of Lakemba.

The association’s founder, Keysar Trad, says Muslims are tired of being picked on by politicians.

He also says it is unlikely the controversial Muslim figure, Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilali, would stand as a candidate.

Mr Trad says the Muslim community, including the sheikh, will hold consultations about putting up candidates in seats including Auburn, Bankstown and Lakemba.

“We need to make sure that we are taken seriously, and that not only in terms of getting them to stop picking on us every time there is an issue, but also in terms of acknowledging that there are strong candidates who are capable of serving this nation in the political arena and who wish to have the honour and who deserve the honour of serving this nation in Parliament,” he said.

Mr Iemma says Sheikh Al Hilali should stand for election rather than look for a candidate.

“Stand yourself, and if he does so, I would welcome the challenge of contrasting my values with his,” he said.

"For example - I love Australia and its people and he doesn’t.

“I believe that the great majority of people in my electorate won’t be voting for lunacy, no matter who’s putting it forward.”
