Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

I think what Jesus means by “the flesh profiteth nothing” is that one can’t grasp what he is saying, if one does not Believe in the Supernatural. And he is speaking about some thing very Supernatural…Transubstantiation.🙂

Has anyone contacted the author of the blog to invite her to discuss this entry? I think that would be a good idea, I’m just not a member of that site and don’t plan to be, so I can’t post there. Maybe someone else here can?

Would you want to enter a thread full of hostile Catholic if you were her? Note one already deemed her unintelligent.

:ehh: You can’t be serious.
We’re not dealing with great moral evil here, but with a simple lack of intelligence and education. The lady has just enough learning to blind her to the fact that she needs the Church to guide her interpreations. I don’t think she really hates the Church, which is what the OP seems to think. Funny how putting the best interpretation on things draws all sorts of accusations.

Hi
I understand John 6, it is all summed up by verse 63
Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: **the words **that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
You are exactly right, verse 63 does sum up John 6.
And what are the words that Jesus is refering to in verse 63?
Well, here is a hint.

John 6: 53-58
"Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." "

So, are you suggesting that Jesus only spoke in metaphors?

Right, but from where do you get the idea that ‘spirit’ can be translated as ‘I’m not being literal’?

Consider this:
When we eat the Body and Blood of Christ we do not just each his dead flesh but the whole living Jesus - flash, blood and divinity. Dead carnal flash would indeed profit nothing, but that’s not what Jesus taught and that’s why he mentioned this. It would be blasphemy to suggest that Jesus actually was speaking about more than dead carnal flash because that would deny Jesus’ sacrifice and indeed the core Christian belief.

In Christ,

Don’t you think she is probably a nice person? You may be right. Why would a nice person attack Christ and His Church?

In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is King.
I don’t see this lady tearing her unborn babies into little pieces so that she can have consequence-free sexual intercourse. Maybe that is a fairly low bar, but frankly we’ve got to be thankful for small amounts of decency.

Speculation as to the lady in question’s “niceness” or lack thereof is not really pertinent to the discussion of what she posted concerning the Catholic faith. Please deal with **that **and avoid speculation and debate over an aspect of her personality that we cannot properly discern.

For instance, her latest installment is about politics and free speech. It is actually written by her husband, he slyly inserts snipets about the Catholic Church in her article.
Contrary to what is being taught in public schools today, this country was founded by born again Christians, where people had the 1st amendment rights to worship God, right to own property, etc. etc, and people from around the world came here to enjoy the freedom. Bible believing Christians came here in order to worship God as their conscience led them. They escaped government run churches in Britain and Continental Europe in order to do so. Although Brittan did have a state approved religion , at least it was a religion based on salvation by faith as is taught in the Bible. Continental Europe, on the other hand, was caught in the grip of the Whore of Babylon - the Roman Catholic Church, drunk on the blood of the Saints, which were born again Christians killed for not bowing to Rome…
The reason born again Christians created a country, the United States, where people had a 1st amendment right to freedom of speech and religion, is because the truth, Christianity and God’s word - the Bible, are not afraid of lies, i.e. every other belief system. It is the lie, which has to be afraid of the truth. This is why belief systems, like communism, Islam and the Roman Catholic Church with it’s inquisition, always have to resort to force and laws which make free speech illegal…
Hate crimes legislation is a stealthy form of oppression. It is a form of ‘Thought Police’ as much as the Roman Catholic inquisition was. At first it’s all about making bigotry illegal, then it turns into making Bible verses illegal as those who hate what the Bible says, label it as hate speech. If the Bible is true, then homosexuality is a sin, and those who don’t repent of it will spend an eternity in hell, therefore; taking the time and trouble of informing lost people of this, is a form of love, not hate. But they will call it hate because they hate hearing it. This is already happening with Candy’s web site. Some Roman Catholics call her site a ‘hate site’ because they hate what it says, even though she is telling them the truth in love hoping that they don’t end up in the flames of hell.** Praise be to God that there have been a number Roman Catholics who emailed her and said that they have been saved thanks to Candy’s willingness to exercise her free speech and tell the truth.** One man’s love is another man’s hate. With freedom comes responsibility. The 1st amendment places upon us who live under its protection, that we have the civic responsibility to endure being offended. As citizens shirk their responsibility to endure speech that they don’t like, they infringe on everybody’s speech rights while trying to act like they are the good guys by calling ‘speech infringement’ hate crimes legislation. The world has always hated the message from Jesus Christ and sought to silence it. This United States is different because it protected the ability to speek the gospel. As Thomas Jefferson put it, ‘The price of liberty is eternal vigalence’. To put it another way, ‘The price of Freedom is that you must constantly keep it from being taken.’
(emphasis is mine)

From what she says on her website, her husband is an ex-Catholic. Her site gets hundreds of hits per day - she has quite a following, and she is misleading all these people and leading many unknowledgeable Catholics away from the Church.

So I guess that Cyril of Jerusalem and Augustine got John 6 wrong. At least we are in good company.
No.

Not even a little.

Cyril of Jerusalem

“The bread and the wine of the Eucharist before the holy invocation of the adorable Trinity were simple bread and wine, but the invocation having been made, the bread becomes the body of Christ and the wine the blood of Christ” (*Catechetical Lectures *19:7 [A.D. 350]).

“Do not, therefore, regard the bread and wine as simply that; for they are, according to the Master’s declaration, the body and blood of Christ. Even though the senses suggest to you the other, let faith make you firm. Do not judge in this matter by taste, but be fully assured by the faith, not doubting that you have been deemed worthy of the body and blood of Christ. . . . [Since you are] fully convinced that the apparent bread is not bread, even though it is sensible to the taste, but the body of Christ, and that the apparent wine is not wine, even though the taste would have it so, . . . partake of that bread as something spiritual, and put a cheerful face on your soul” (ibid., 22:6, 9).

“Then having sanctified ourselves by these spiritual Hymns, we beseech the merciful God to send forth His Holy Spirit upon the gifts lying before Him; that He may make the Bread the Body of Christ, and the Wine the Blood of Christ; for whatsoever the Holy Ghost has touched, is surely sanctified and changed.” (ibid., 23:7 [A.D. 350).[/COLOR]

“Then, after the spiritual sacrifice, the bloodless service, is completed, over that sacrifice of propitiation we entreat God for the common peace of the Churches, for the welfare of the world; for kings; for soldiers and allies; for the sick; for the afflicted; and, in a word, for all who stand in need of succour we all pray and offer this sacrifice” (ibid., 23:8 [A.D. 350).

**Augustine

“Christ was carried in his own hands when, referring to his own body, he said, ‘This is my body’ [Matt. 26:26]. For he carried that body in his hands” (*Explanations of the Psalms *33:1:10 [A.D. 405]).

“I promised you [new Christians], who have now been baptized, a sermon in which I would explain the sacrament of the Lord’s Table. . . . That bread which you see on the altar, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the body of Christ. That chalice, or rather, what is in that chalice, having been sanctified by the word of God, is the blood of Christ” (*Sermons *227 [A.D. 411]).

“What you see is the bread and the chalice; that is what your own eyes report to you. But what your faith obliges you to accept is that the bread is the body of Christ and the chalice is the blood of Christ. This has been said very briefly, which may perhaps be sufficient for faith; yet faith does not desire instruction” (ibid., 272).

Hope this helps. :tiphat:

Yeah, and one of the first things those religious-freedom-loving, born-again Christians did was to start persecuting Catholics in the colonies. These folks should learn a little more about the history of their own religious-freedom-loving born-again forebearers.

Although one cannot comment on the personality or intelligence of this woman I must say that I am yet to come across a well informed Christian of the kind she claims to be (i.e. the evangelical or fundamentalist type).
