I has been oppressive here for weeks (hot and very humid) and with a poor parish and no money for the air conditioner repair (it will be thousands) it’s been a hot few weeks. Fans help a little. Our priest isn’t very old, but maybe in his late 60’s, and I see it wearing on him going to 2 church’s and being the only priest.
I will pray not only for cooler air but more vocations this week, something I had done and lately had forgotten concentrating on other things.
That homily was funny, I might suggest it to him. : )

As other posters have mentioned, there are certainly ways to shorten the mass and not invalidate it.
In the old days, when it was extremely hot and the churches had no air conditioning, more people just went to an earlier mass.

In the old days, most people went to a low Mass, and those could be said in 30 min or less (and they frequently were) without a problem.

The OF today, on a Sunday, is usually 45 to 60 minutes or so, and to shorten it, one has to omit a number of things. You really can’t compare the two.

Besides, omitting the Creed does not invalidate the Mass, and I think it is really a good idea if all of us reread Father’s post–after all, he is a priest and knows what he is talking about.

It is my opinion that the elderly who cannot tolerate the heat should stay home and not put themselves at risk. In some areas it is 90 degrees even in the early morning. The very young and elderly can’t thermoregulate their bodies well and are subject to heatstroke.

Other options to shorten a Sunday Mass due to the heat wave:

Process from the sacristy to shorten the procession.
Omit singing altogether.
Shorten the homily to only a few minutes.
Use the shortest version of prayers.
Omit the sign of peace.

After the heat wave is over, return to customary practices.
I would suggest sitting down as an option as well. I’ve seen too many pass out in churches because of the heat or standing too long.

The Mass in the hospital chapel where I attended never went over 30 minutes. And it was quite reverent; it just wasn’t crowded.
