I’m aware that honey, for instance, will taste different depending on what type of flower the bees have been visiting. I’ve also read that the meat of an animal that is killed humanely and with care and respect, will taste different than that of the same type of animal that dies in fear and panic.

So, if you want to have healthy veggies, you need to not induce fear and panic:

Cute.

I once read a child’s book about the adventures of an onion, a lemon and garlic on a trip together. Needless to say, it did not end well for any of them.

Hello everyone.

The purpose of this question is to ask you whether a catholic should be a vegetarian or not, because I recently had a conversation with some vegan and vegetarian people, some of them were catholic as well, and the made me think about some facts. (Some even say, “you should be forced to be a vegan”)

Since the sacred scriptured record Jesus eating both fish and lamb (in Passover), we all know that he wasn’t definetely a vegetarian (altough there are may people claimming the opposite), and also in books like Leviticus and Deuteronomy we can find out which animals were people allowed to eat and which not . However, those people made me think about factory farming and how it kill and torture animals and destroy the envinroment.

My question is, should a catholic keep eating meat even if they know about the threatment to animals by factory farms and its ecological impact?, isn’t that unethical?, what would Jesus do in such a case?, what is the position of the church?.

Thanks for your attention.
God bless!
God does NOT forbid us to eat meat. Vegetarians and vegans have no right to stick their noses into anyone’s dietary habits. God gave us freewill and the right to eat meat but these people want to override God’s will. If anyone wants to be vegetarian or vegan that is their right but they should just shut up when it comes to other people.

And vice-versa. 😃

I became vegetarian 15+ years ago, for ethical reasons. I was an agnostic, then Buddhist (who strongly urge vegetarianism).

When I stuck my toe into Christianity again, I found it interesting to note that in the Garden, God instructed Adam & Eve to eat only plants, fruits, seeds, etc. Animals were not used for food until after the fall, as I understand it. I also recently read that St Augustine was vegetarian.

All this is neither here nor there in the grand scheme of things. To each his own, as long as the animals are treated humanely.

( If the Church required meat-eating I guess I would be a Bad Catholic & be in confession a lot. 🙂 )

I always have the question as to why God made animals to eat other animals, i.e. lions eat wildebeest etc ?

If He intended for us to be vegetarians, why not animals too ?

Animals didn’t sin, yet the animal world is vicious and brutal, but all do what they do to survive.

Also, humans in certain climates could not survive on a vegetarian diet.
But of course we’re told we live in a fallen state and this is why.

I don’t even understand why so many vegetarians insist with (Daniel 1:8), I have read it several times and can’t find vegan propaganda anywhere, could somebody please explain me the meaning of that passage?, I’m still studying the bible and cannot deal with everything.

I’m a Catholic vegetarian. I have a protein/fruit shake in the morning, b12 supplements too. I rarely eat tofu, unless it’s made in an interesting fashion. There’s lots of other great choices and recipes.
I once researched the eating habits of our Lord’s time and surroundings. There wasn’t much choice in those days and in those places. Some of the info I came across said that restaurants have their roots in the old testament days of public animal sacrifices and burnt offerings.
I can’t eat animals mainly because I am one of those whacko animal lovers. ❤️ I don’t like the sensation of sinking my teeth into flesh or the taste of blood. Another reason is for health.
There are religious orders that don’t eat meat as a rule. I don’t have to worry about the Fridays of Lent. 😉 My son is also a vegetarian (his choice). I would just go with it’s up to an individual whether or not they eat meat.
😃

The Rule of St Benedict says, not to eat the flesh of quadrupeds, animals that have four feet.

So, dairy, chicken, eggs and fish are permitted.

Interesting.
Personally I still feel teeth sinking into flesh with chicken and taste their blood, and I picture fish gasping for breath, hooked by their mouths. (Told you I’m a whacko 😉
I like cheeses made with vegetarian rennet and I also eat egg whites. I love nonfat Greek yogurt and so does my cat, Aslan Max.
I eat whole hard boiled eggs at Eastertide. There are really tasty fake sausages and fake bacon made with soy protein…altho the sodium content is pretty high to make it tasty.
I wonder if there are other rules from other orders available somewhere. I think the Carmelites are vegetarians…not sure. Will check.
A little later: Well, I immediately found that there are Carmelite vegetarians and I think it’s a general rule. I think St. Faustina’s order was also vegetarian.

Thank you. At least you acknowledge my right.
I do indeed recognise your right to choose not to eat meat.
My irritation is due to the number of times over the years in these forums that vegetarians, vegans and PETA have all come here demanding we stop eating meat despite God having given us the right to eat meat. Even worse, some of them are Catholic and don’t even realise that.

I think 1:12 is the more apt.

I don’t recall such demands.

Each one to himself - if you eat meat that is fine, if you are a vegetarian, that is fine.
**Romans 14:14
I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.
Colossians 2:16
“Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:”

It always makes me very nervous when this topic comes up - either way - we must all become vegetarians or it is somehow “wrong” to be a vegetarian if Christ and the early Christians ate meat. It is silly - we are not Jews, to encumber ourselves with such dietary restrictions and/or obligations - either way.

(Full disclosure: I have been vegetarian since I was 14.)

It’s definitely a matter of choice, and a lifestyle.
There was one person who said animals weren’t vegetarians…but some of them are. The powerful gorilla is a vegetarian. 😃 And probably fruits and vegetables and supplements aren’t that available everywhere in the world as someone else said.

Even if they come here doing such demands, we all know that the bible doesn’t command us to be abstain from meat, but it doesn’t command us to be vegetarians as well.

For example:

Genesis 9:1-4
Exodus 12
Exodus 29
Leviticus 11
Deuteronomy 12: 14-15
Deuteronomy 14
Psalms 78:27 “It talks against gluttuny later, but not against meat consumption”
Acts 10:13-15
John 6:11
Luke 15:22-24

In my experience, there are many many more Catholics who having a mocking attitude towards vegetarianism than support it. 10 to 1, something like that. And, then, of course, thankfully, there is the vast majority that couldn’t care less what their fellow Catholics eat. 🙂
