Should altar servers remove the Blessed Sacrament from the tabernacle?

I am a server. The Tabernacle is in the Chapel behind the main Church hall. During communion at Mass, a server (adult) goes to the tabernacle and gets consecrated hosts to bring to the main Church room in case the Eucharistic Ministers run out of hosts.

Is this wrong?

As a server myself, whether something is wrong or right, barring something rediculously outrageous, I do what the priest tells me to do. I am there to serve and not to tell the priest how to run the lituryg or the rules of the Church. It’s not my place.

There have been occasions where I wasn’t sure and felt uncomfortable about something and so I said that. “Are you sure? I feel uncomfortable about that Father. Is it OK for me to do that?” and if Father says “Go”, I go.

If Father calls me to the presider’s chair and whispers, “Go order me a pizza for after Mass”, I quietly slip into the vestry and order him a pizza. That’s what I do.

Whether it is wrong or right, do what the priest tells you. A server is exactly that - a server.

That is correct, I should have said that above. You are free to write the bishop (in fact, I would, after reading Redemptonis Sacramentum 183,184), but in the meantime, obey. Unless, of course, your bishop responds and tells you to stop. Then your priest would be short-circuted, and your duty to obedience would be directly to the bishop.

In my parish the Tabernacle is located in the chapel connected to the church in the back. There is no way the priest is going to interrupt Mass to leave the sanctuary during Mass and walk all the way to the back of the church to put the ciborium back into the Tabernacle. An EMHC does this.

However, the person doing what you have described above should probably be an EMHC rather than an altar server. However, aren’t you supposed to follow the instructions of the Pastor?

There is an easy fix for this problem…move the tabernacle back where it belongs, in the sactuary directly behind teh altar.

Exactly! People jump through so many hoops to justify this stuff when really, there’s one question:

Are you a cathedral or major tourist attraction. If no, tabernacle in middle. Done.

All well and good, but it’s not like the tabernacle is just a normal piece of furniture that can be easily moved around.

So in those churches where it is located in an adoration chapel, someone has to retrieve the reserved species. If there isn’t another ordained person to do it, an adult EMHC or altar server is really the only option.

Set up fundraisers to move the tabernacle and prayer vigils for more vocations! Cause that is what we really need!
