Should Catholics attend U2 concerts?

I’m curious to see what people think. Three years ago I attended a U2 concert and I had an amazing time. It looks like they are going on tour again and I would like to see them. I know that Bono supports organizations that do things that go against the Church. For example, I know he is a huge supporter of Amnesty International. I know that the Church used to support this organization for the most part, until they started giving birth control to people in Africa. I don’t think this is the main reason Bono supports the organization, he seems more interested in what the organization does in terms of freeing prisoners and I assume that that can be something perfectly in line with the teachings of the Church. So my question is, should I still go to their concerts? Is it fine as long as I don’t support that particular organization myself? I actually disagree with a lot of the band’s political ideas but the music is so good I’m able to look past this.

I don’t think he is Catholic. In all honesty, I don’t think that anyone can answer this for you. You would have to weigh his politics against what you like about the music. I know he is very big into human rights and those kinds of social issues and from the things I read about him, he does try to practice what he preaches, well above what the normal rock type star does. I don’t think he does drugs or promote immoral life style. These are things you will have to consider in your decision. Maybe spend some time in adoration for your answer.
 
Of course you can attend any concert you wish.

and guess what, they’ve all been great! So go to any concert or movie you wish.
 
There are certainly worse acts you could see. At least U2 addresses Christian themes in many of their songs. I saw U2 way back in the early 1980s when they were the opening act for the J. Geils Band (anyone remember them?). But the older I get, the less inclined I am to go to concerts.
 
Hopefully Bono has his issues worked out. When I saw them in Madison, WI in the early 1990’s Bono was so wasted that he could barely stand up and his lyrics were so slurred it was like a bad comedy imitation of a drunk guy. Very disappointing in spite of the flying Trabants.

Morally? It’s just a concert.
 
Not a U2 fan, everything basically sounds the same. Bono does a lot of good around the world, and I’m a big fan of that. I went to see George Harrison many years ago, not much Catholicism going on there, what a great show, Ravi Shankar put me asleep but George and Eric Clapton were great. I’d go.

I guess that would have been the 360deg tour? I also went to that in Aus. in 2010 and loved it. They were supported by JayZ and he was excellent as well. Unfortunately it doesn’t look as if they are bringing the ‘Innocence and Experience’ tour down here next year otherwise I’d be off to that as well.

I love their unashamed Christian lyrics and Bono’s spirituality. For me, if Pope St John Paul II was happy to host Bono at the Vatican then he is good enough for me too. Pope StJPII invited Bob Dylan and BB King to perform at Vatican concerts also. Music is a wonderful celebration of the spirit of love and humanity. We don’t need to get twisted in knots about everything about a person. Nobody is perfect but a musical gift is definitely worth celebrating.
 
You can certainly attend a U2 concert. I like this band.

I’m probably dating myself, but the last concert I’ve attended was a Pearl Jam concert.
 
Please! Of course you can go to a U2 concert! U2 is the best band in the world. Bono has done so much good for so many. I wish I could say that I’ve walked the walk and talked the talk like Bono has.
