Last Halloween, the children at our family Mass were permitted to wear costumes to Mass. Two girls, of about eight or so, came dressed as witches. The pastor said he could do nothing about their dress and served them Communion. Are there any guidelines for costumes worn around Halloween?

If families were told that their children could come to Mass dressed up for Halloween, then there was nothing wrong with parents allowing their children to go to Mass dressed in traditional Halloween costumes. Certainly, the children should not be singled out and humiliated by being refused Communion. Your pastor did the right thing.

That said, this year the parish might modify the celebration and announce it as an “All Hallows Eve Mass,” at which families are encouraged to dress up as saints and heroes of the faith. This might help to eliminate confusion on what kind of costumes are expected. But if a child still shows up dressed as a witch, he or she should not be denied Communion.
