I would say yes, along with race, class, health, and religion – but the question is in what context, and to what extent. I’m somewhat critical of the good formal dialogues can do; we want everything to be a dialogue these days, it seems.

Answer: Never in a public school.

Reason #1 (Most impotant): IT IS NOT AN ACADEMIC SUBJECT FOR ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN. Essential learning for the elementary grades does not include sex education beyond that related to reproduction.

The core learning for these ages does not include sophisticated varieties of sexual behavior other than what is normative, which is the dominant heterosexual pattern in biology. Sophisticated variants of sexual behavior, including BDSM, bestiality, incest, and more, are also not appropriate for the life experience and the psychological developmental stages of the elementary age child.

Reason #2 for any level: It is not core learning even for high school. As an academic subject.

Now, if particular public schools want to have clubs outside of academic time, in which to have these discussions, that’s another matter. Lots of items that are topical (“in the news”) are not matters for the classroom.

**Sodomy is a sexual practice. It is not a lifestyle. **

Sodomy is at the heart of homosexuality, and homosexuality is a lifestyle.

Stop being obtuse.

One does not need to touch on sex to talk about it. In elementary school even before they know of sex they can get crushes on another child. To the boy who gets a crush on a girl it is easy to explain and vice versa, but what can be said to a five year old boy who gets a crush on a classmate?

Homosexuality is about far more than oral and anal sex, indeed those aren’t even necessary. Homosexuality is no more a lifestyle than heterosexuality which is to say neither are.

Teachers, teaching academics, do not need to discuss social-psychological issues affecting one particular child during classroom time. That’s why public school districts have psychologists on staff, and that’s also what parents are for.

Repeating title of thread:
Should homoexuality be discussed in the classroom?

Are you suggesting that children shouldn’t be taught about rape and murder?

One more roll of bubblewrap here please! Our kids are gonna be raised like they’re living in Sesame Street. No, safer than Sesame Street. Let’s just keep them locked up and the TV off. Murder doesn’t exist, and neither does rape.
They should be taught the truth. Same sex attraction is a development disorder. It should not be taught as “normal” when it is not.

Only if the situation forces it should it be discussed.

Elementary school is actually a good place to intervene as you can help them before they get the terrible idea that their love for another person of the same sex should be expressed sexually.

Why are you listening to a Pelagian institution teach Freudian psychology? It’s neither sound science nor sound theology.

Of course it’s not normal, red hair isn’t normal either, both affect a statisticall small percentage of the population

So does bank robbery.

Can someone teach me?
When you learn about something, does it mean you are taught how to do it?

Using your logic, teaching someone about Hitler is teaching someone how to build a gas chamber.

]?
I agree. I’ve yet to read/hear/see any evidence that our children are such fine writers, mathematicians, logicians, historians, scientists, musicians, and artists that we have time for direct social engineering - but indeed, that is the aim of many.

Wrong. That is not the role of the public school teacher. It is the role of the parent of that elementary school child, first of all, and it is not the location of a classroom, in group setting, second of all, where such matters are brought up. No more than it is the place in the classroom for a student of any age to air similar highly personal subject matter such as incest, parents battling with each other, alcohol and drug use at home. In fact, I will tell you that any public school teacher who allowed such personal (confidential) information to be openly discussed in the classroom would be reprimanded by administration for so doing. It would be extremely unprofessional of that teacher to allow that to occur in front of other students.

Again, that’s why the districts have professional non-academic staff, in the event that a child finds parents so unapproachable that theoretically the only place he or she could discuss this would be outside of family, at school. Confidential opportunities can be arranged for that student. If the student wants the teacher at that conference for some reason, that can also be arranged. It happens sometimes in elementary school & often in high school. That’s why public high school counselors are trained in the psychological needs of the adolescent, and why it’s hard to qualify as such a counselor unless you do have that training.

Classrooms are not private counseling opportunities. Those are referred outside the classroom.

The only thing that would be “forced” to be discussed would be behavior such as name-calling or bullying. That is a generic discussion about those behaviors, which apply to all students and their peculiarities as individuals. That is a classroom discussion that does not get into details about specifics, but remains a discussion about acceptable behavior and school & district policy. Often those policies are also discussed by senior administrative personnel at assembles, etc.

Well, I don’t know that it is. Female homosexuality too? I think I am right in my understanding that sodomy is acceptable to the Church within marriage as long as you end up in ‘the right place’?

SHOULD homosexuality, or any other sexual sin, be discussed in the classroom?
First consider that Saint Paul, by the Holy Ghost, taught in scripture that it is
wrong for such things to even be mentioned among God’s people. But I think that means that it is shameful especially for baptized Christians to be practicing such deeds, not a prohibition on discussing the topic.

But in the classroom?
That depends. What AGE of kids are you talking about?
If you are talking about discussing explicit sexual behavior of ANY sort with
children say, under the age of 13 or so, I really regard that as an absolute
abomination, because you are taking away their innocence, which they have a RIGHT
to, in their tender years by discussing such things. This can hyper-sexualize young children ( I know, because I experienced it when people talked explicitly to me about sexual activity when I was well under 12 years of age. It made me curious, and aroused greatly, very EARLY in life, by things that at the time I would never have given any thought to whatsoever nor have been tempted by ). Scandalizing little kids like that is extremely, extremely EVIL. NO, it should NOT be taught to little kids.
And even when taught to older kids, such as 12 or 13 and up, it should be discussed honestly but very DISCREETLY, wiith great care not to scandalize or cause them to think unduly about explicit behaviour, which could and does, lead them into sin at an early age.

Those secularists, like our former surgeon general Joycelyn Elders, who once said something to the effect that it’s okay to teach little children that it’s alright to masturbate, are going to be in SERIOUS trouble with God, in THIS life as well as they next, if they don’t ABJECTLY repent of these things immediately. In this life too? Yes, God sometimes does that. I firmly believe that. Sometimes, when you hear about a notorious person wrapping his car around a tree in a horrible accident, well, it MAY have NOT been entirely an “accident,” if you know what I mean. It may have, in some cases, been a final judgment. So DON’T scandalize little children: Scandalizing little children is extremely grievous.
