Should I admonish a classmate about modesty?

One of my classmates (we are both female) dresses modestly for the most part but in one detail it seems to me that she tries but slightly misses the mark. I feel that she must be unaware of the effect this gives. Should I mention this to her? By an unsigned note? By getting to know her better over several months? By a signed note? Right now I do not know her well.

Consider for a moment how you would feel if a signed or unsigned note were passed to you admonishing you that you were dressing immodestly. What would be your reaction? What do you think would be the reaction of most people to such a note? Even if you personally would be grateful and adjust accordingly, my guess is that many people would be embarrassed and become defensive, perhaps angry – especially if the note was from someone they did not know well and whose opinion they did not yet have reason to respect.

I recommend a different approach. After getting to know this young woman better and becoming friends, you might mention in the course of conversation a booklet titled Pure Womanhood by Crystalina Evert, and tell your friend how much you liked what the booklet had to say. If the friend then seems interested, you could say, “I think I have an extra copy somewhere. If I manage to find it, would you like it?” If she agrees, give her a copy of the booklet. It has a section on the importance of dressing modestly.
