Should I apologize for something I didn't do?

Hi everyone. I was accused of a certain thing the other day by a few of my friends. It was something that neither I nor Darrell did. Darrell was also accused of something that he didn’t do. Anyway, a friend of mine tells me that I should apologize for doing this thing even though I did not really do it. I do not feel like I should do that. There are a couple of reasons why. First, because I would be ruining my reputation by basically admitting to doing something that I did not do. Second, because it would be almost like lying to them. I mean, I’d be basically admitting to doing something that I didn’t really do so it would be lying in a sense. And finally, it may only make my former friends even angrier at me. What do you think I should do? 🤷

The truth will set you free. Maybe apologizing for causing some misunderstanding somehow might be in order, but lying doesn’t solve anything. If you didn’t do it then you didn’t do it and shouldn’t suffer the consequences. If your friends are really your friends then they will accept your word when you tell them, in all honesty, that you are innocent. If not then I suggest finding some new friends.

St Dominic Savio reportedly bore punishment from his schoolteacher for something a classmate had done. Doesn’t mean he confessed to a wrong he hadn’t done, though, and I wouldn’t advise apologising for something you didn’t do either.

Ok but I don’t think that I caused any misunderstanding. But thank you for your advice. 🙂

Thank you for this advice LilyM. 🙂

STM you’d be living a lie - I think you’ve answered your question 🙂

If you messed up admit it; if you didn’t, no need to apologize.

“I didn’t do it, but I’m sorry that it happened.” should take care of it. 🙂

Sorry that what happened? Nothing happened. And I did apologize for slamming the door in their face.

Oops. I didn’t read your post carefully.

How about “I’m sorry we’re having this whole disagreement thing”.

As a Christian, one should bear wrongs patiently.

Charity endures all things. Let it go. And don’t hang out with people who get you in trouble or accuse you of things.

Though, in that situation, St. Dominic was taking the punishment for the other person. It seems in this case that there would be no one else to punish, so she sacrifices for naught.
