Is it safe to bank and buy on-line? Has anyone out there been burned? Some of my info is out there and I am wondering if I am being too trusting.

Thanks.

I just started doing some stuff on line and I check it every day…just a little nervous? ya THINK???

It’s safer than driving you car down the street, so why not make the world your market place and be thrifty. On-line banking is enormously convenient and prudent (credit cards, local banks, national accounts are all on-line today (ING Direct has paid out more than 2 billion dollars in interest since Sept. 2000; current short term money 3.75%). Everything is at your fingertips instantly: pay bills, move money, examine your credit card statement; pay your credit card statement.

I love online banking. I’ve been lucky and have had no bad experiences. I have also shopped online. Personally, I think it’s wonderful.

I have traded online for years and my current 401K does everything on-line. The only banking I have done on-line is buy some CD’s at my former credit union. I do check my current bank and checking accounts on-line, but to transactions.

As for buying things on-line, that has been limited to mostly books and music. I am thinking of expanding that to clothes and other things, but I have not yet decided.

It IS so easy to bank and buy on-line! I guess I’ve heard one too many horror stories about stolen identity and ruined credit. I’ve got to remember that the media focuses on the negative. I want to continue banking on-line. I love having everything at my fingertips…just don’t want the info at anyone else’s!

because our home computer network is used for business, which is conducted online, we have sophisticated “industrial strength” security and firewall protections in place, which are updated continually.

we have been banking, investing. bill-paying and purchasing online for years with no problem, great savings in time, money and hassle, and the benefit of great organization and tracking for tax purposes. We know where virtually every dollar goes, because for other purchases we use specific credit and debit cards, in accounts that give us tracking info online. we can check almost instantly on deposits, payments, purchases etc., and detect within almost moments if there is a misuse of an account. This has happened, usually by family members.

I recently opened a savings account with an online bank. I did so in large part because the interest rate I now receive from my “virtual bank” is considerably higher than what my “brick and motar” bank is offering. (The money in both accounts is insured by the Federal government, incidentally.) If necessary, I can transfer money between all of my accounts in less than a minute.

I also had misgivings about paying bills on line through my bank, but I have never had a problem and it is so quick! After the payee is typed in, it is a permanent record that takes only a click of the mouse when paying a bill. No stamps, no envelopes, no writing checks. All one has to do is be sure and update a checkbook balance, if you occasionally write a check.

I also have an online account with a brokerage and have traded stocks without any problems for going on two years.

Sometimes I get nervous about giving my credit card number online when making a purchase, but the security symbol in the bottom of the screen has lessened these fears a great deal.

I’m another who does all banking and the vast amount of my shopping online. Never a problem. My suggestions:
  • Make sure your security is in place, including a personal firewall.
  • Keep your security subscriptions up to date and do a weekly scan of your computer.
  • Make sure you’re dealing with reputable online businesses/banks.
  • Make sure that any transactions you make show the little “lock” icon on the lower right corner of your browser window – that indicates they have a secure network.

The chances of theft are far greater when you use your credit card at a store than on internet. This was reported very recently on the news. I am a former bank employee. Never got a complaint of theft via internet. I think we are all getting a bit paranoid and we do need to be careful, but we also need to be able to “trust” as much as possible. Take all the necessary, wise, precautions and enjoy the wonderous inventions of electronics.

I’ve been banking online since it was first available. It takes seconds to pay your bills, and on my bank’s website, most of my bills (electric, phone, etc) are delivered right to my account. I can pay them as they come due, or in the case of bills that are always the same amount I can set up an automatic debit. I control the automatic debit, however, and can turn it off any time I choose. It takes a little time to enter all your accounts the first time, but after that it’s smooth sailing. The only problem I ever had was of my own making…I left out the decimal point and paid $9000 for my parking space one month. It took about 3 days to straighten that out.

As for shopping, I did most of my Christmas shopping online. I use Amazon.com, QVC, HSN. I sell rubber stamping and scrapbooking supplies, and I order those online too. I order my prescriptions from my insurance company’s vendor online, and never run out anymore.

I’m very comfortable and confident using online banking and shopping. Deb

I have banked on line and bought and sold on line with no bad results…but I have heard some bad stories. I can’t imagine myself getting burned… The old" blood out of a turnup" thing 🙂

If you’re eligible, USAA has one of the safest, easiest to use websites imaginable. Their service is second to none, plus nearly every banking service is free. I can’t say enough about USAA.
