Should I Continue Supporting FOCUS?

I’ve been around a few college campuses that have Fellowship of Catholic University Students missionaries. To be honest, I haven’t been very impressed. I know their intentions are good by spreading the Gospel and evangelizing on college campuses. Yet, as a student, I have not been invited to a single event FOCUS has sponsored on campus or impacted by their presence at my parish. There are Bible studies happening throughout the year, and it was advertised at our parish that FOCUS missionaries would be around after mass to provide more details about them. I couldn’t find a missionary afterward to get more information. I met two of them at the beginning of the school year and neither mentioned anything about these Bible studies. They also quickly forgot my name and called me another name when our conversation concluded. When I do see the missionaries at the parish, they are either all together in a clique (or with the same group of students) or acting like sugar-induced high schoolers, yelling, screaming or being rambunctious down the halls. In short, I don’t feel comfortable supporting this kind of evangelization effort if these are the results my parish and other parishes are getting from these missionaries. I think my normal donation to FOCUS would be better suited for my local parish.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Or should I reconsider pulling my donation?

No, I haven’t, but based upon your story, you would be justified reapportioning your money to another cause such as your parish. However, I would think it’s just civil to let FOCUS know your problems, in order for them to do the best work they can.
