Everyone is required to fast for one hour before receiving Holy Communion. Now, one hour is not a long time, but it is the minimum.
Previously, Catholics were required to fast (from everything, including water) beginning at midnight before receiving Holy Communion. In 1955, that was relaxed to three hours from food and one hour from drinks (except for ordinary water).
And necessary medicine, if you’re unable to adjust your medication schedule to be an hour before Mass for any oral meds, also permitted. I find it hardest for Mass other than first thing in the morning (I have no problem getting up & ready and then go to Mass and only after that having breakfast; OTOH, if I’m going to a 7pm Mass, I really have to stop & think about not eating).
****You have to fast one hour before receiving holy communion, whether that requires you fast at all before mass depends on how long the masses are in your parish, the time between the beginning of mass and communion, as you presumably won’t be eating in church.
