Should I get rid of blue blanky?

The polyester fleece particles from blankets, jackets and the kid’s stuffed animals are all over my house. It’s like a dust made of individual fleece fibers. It took me a long time to figure out what this stuff was. There is so much of it that I was concerned about it before I even knew what it was.

Now that I know it’s fleece fibers, I’m unsure what to do about it. We have tons of stuffed animals which are constantly being tossed around the house, shedding these polyester fibers. One of my kids has a favorite fleece blue blanky. He drags it all around the house, and it leaves blue fibers all over the house. Should I get rid of blue blanky?

Only if you’re willing to cope with the melt-down and heart-breaking sobs that will accompany loss of said blue blanky. I’d eat a pound of fibers rather than go through that.

You know your own kids well. I would say yes.

IMO (that of a 17 year old) 8 is kinda old for a kid to have a ‘comfort object’ like that, but I have no experience with that, so…

My daughter had hers sewn into a pillow that she took to university.

Do you have pets? Could you say, for instance, that the dog peed on it? My kids are happy to give up their stuff once that happens…😂

He’s eight years old, so I’m thinking this shouldn’t be totally devastating for him. Maybe I could offer to replace it with a cotton blanky.
My husband put his blankee into a large scientific test tube…mostly because it was so tattered it could fit into one. It might be good to find some kind of memorialization for blue blankee and then find another. I suggest looking into a high-quality American microfleece as a replacement. It seems that the offenders were cheap jackets

You don’t get rid of your pet because they create hair dust bunnies.

Just vacuum more frequently and remove only the toys that are clearly disintigrating

…that and a bottle of Xanax. Maybe get some hepa air cleaners. I had two blankets. [I am just not ready to call it a blankee…] One fell apart the other I used as a pillow.

Yeah, mine still has her waffle weave blanky in her apartment. LOL at being too old for a kid to have a comfort object.

To answer the OP, you might see if your child would accept a replacement blanket that doesn’t contain the substance that you find so offensive, but I would be wary of forcing a child to give up a comfort object before he/she is ready.

Mine has been married for 11 1/2 years and has two kids. She says she doesn’t know where the pillow is… not sure I believe her. 😁

I think that seems to be one of the lessons here. Stay away from cheap fleece. Unfortunately, I think blue blanky falls into the cheap fleece category.

He’s only had it for a little over a year, but it’s one of his favorite things because it’s so soft. I’m not sure how much sentimental attachment he has to it. I probably won’t replace it, just wanted to know if other people thought that fleece could be the next lead paint.

Plastic microfibers are apparently being found everywhere. And nobody knows how breathing, eating and drinking these things will effect us.

Whenever I dust, I expect that the dust will look like, well…dust. Two weeks after I dust something, there’s a fresh layer of these fine fibers. It doesn’t look like dust at all. It looks like the dryer vent has come loose and gotten lint all over the house, but it’s not the dryer.

Is Ann Landers still answering questions? Maybe I should ask her. 😝

Do you have any sewing skills?

This stuff is about the softest stuff in the world and made better than anything. It’s also fairly heavy…it lists cotton but I’m 90% sure it’s poly. It’s the stuff that I use for my kid’s blankees. Washes AMAZING!

This might be too juvenile for him but you also could find others that are polyester that will work and are really nice

This plus bias tape makes a quick and easy blanket.

I wish I did. I could use that skill frequently if I had it. Someone gave us a sewing machine, and we’ve been talking about using it. I’ve only used one a time or two.

That is a great lead for anyone who wants to make a blanky for kids. Thanks!

It’s funny you said that. There are a few that are the most disintegrated. Those are the ones they cherish the most. I am not allowed to get rid of them.

I thought you were going to say that!
Try substituting one at a time, so it’s gradual. I expect that will be better than all just disappearing, though that to may work after an initial rough spot.
