Should I go to confession on Sunday?

I am 15 and I just went to confession last week. I had like 3 mortal sins to confess, one of them being sacriledge and another masturbation. I was so happy to finally be telling the priest my sins and I was willing to tell him anything and everything. After I told him about masturbation he asked, so you did that once? I said yes, not really aware that he was asking me if I had done it more than once, which I had. In fact, it has become a habit that I am determined to break. So I lied in confession. I have been feeling bad about it all week. Should I ask the busy priest to hear my confession on Sunday?

the details belong in the confessional, not here. you did not lie, you answered and did your best. you were absolved, put it behind you and concentrate on the penance and advice you were given on avoiding temptation in the future. do not form the dangerous habit of monday-morning-quarterbacking your confessions. move forward, not backward. confess to a priest, not an anonymous on-line forum

You have to be conscious of a lie. You said you were not really aware what he was asking…if that is the case then it is not intentional. For a lie to be a lie it MUST be intentional…

One can not be telling the truth and still not be lying. For example the misinformed could be giving out some information that was false but they thought it was true…that is not lying but it is also not telling the truth.

Because you did not realise the question, then as far as I know there is no sin, you didn’t know you were lying. With that said if its a matter of attention it is of vital importance that you listen well within the confessional.

With that said, you should bring it up at the next confession that you made a mistake during the last.

Is masturbation really a mortal sin?

It’s always what’s called grave matter - always. To be a mortal sin 3 conditions must be met -

1. it must be grave matter
2. you must have full knowledge of the fact that it’s grave matter (which you do now, and which you would if told by your priest or if you read the Catechism section which gives the Church’s teaching on masturbation) and
3. you must voluntarily commit the sin. In other words no mental illness, no gun being held to your head.

In the case of the m word, certain circumstances like force of habit, if it’s something you are addicted to and really struggling with, may lessen your culpability - making it in your individual case a venial sin or (very rarely) no sin at all.

But that doesn’t excuse you from doing your best to avoid it - after all, it’s objectively an offence to God, and we do want to avoid things that are displeasing to Him wherever possible, no?

And certainly we are always to avoid what’s called the ‘occasion of sin’. So if you know there are certain movies, tv shows, music or whatever that frequently tempt you to this particular sin, you must do your best to avoid them.

You have not sinned further. You should, however tell the priest in your next confession, which, for getting over the sexual sins, should be often!
