Should I go to this wedding?

I’ll try and keep this brief. My wife’s sister is getting married, in a Catholic church (with Mass), in two weeks time. She is co-habiting and has not been to Mass for years. She has no intention of going to confession but will probably recieve communion. She really is ignorant to the faith and has no malicious intentions.

My wife and I feel very uncomfortable about the whole situation, firstly because we know that she and others who attend the ceremony will recieve communion in a state of serious sin, and secondly because we doubt that they really know what a marriage is. They are going to make vows that they are unable to keep.

We’ve tried asking her NOT to have the Mass. She just can’t seem to grasp the importace of the Eucharist.
We’ve tried asking her to go to confession, which seems unlikely (even if she did go, she isn’t sorry, so it wouldn’t be valid.)

I proposed that we don’t go to the wedding in protest. But my wife is in a very delicate situation- in that, she has only recently started talking to this sister after many years, and boycotting the wedding would destroy any future contact with ANY of her family, because they are totally unable to understand where we are coming from. Any time my wife or I even mention God or faith it ends in a shouting match. Even if we don’t go they’ll go ahead with it anyway (they already know what we think).

should we boycott in protest and be ostracised by an unforgiving bitter family who would write us off as religious maniacs? Or should we go, and hope that the grace of the Sacrament changes them? or is there some other way that we are unable to think of? Talking to them, just ***doesn’t ***work!

Have you any suggestions?

Hi,

I suggest that you go to the wedding. Make an appearance at the reception, but be as low key as possible. They know what you think. You have done all you can do for now. To cause a family rift would only make any future evangelization all the more difficult to accomplish. You are in my prayers.
