Should I have taken communion?

I will give (briefly as I can) the factual situation and then ask for your answers.

Went to confession directly before mass, and confessed all sins I could think of to the Priest…including the fact that I married outside the Catholic church (to a Protestant) without any dispensation. Then during mass I took communion. Was this wrong?

My understanding of why a marriage (in my situation) would be a sin is that the Catholic church doesn’t recognize the marriage…so that when my wife and I have marital relations we are fornicating.

Well obviously we didn’t have marital relations between the time I confessed and the time I took communion…so was I ok in doing so?

Thanks

Only if after confession you intended (so, still intend) to have the marriage convalidated as soon as possible and until then refrain from relations. (my DH and I were in the same situation until we convalidated our marriage back in May.)

So basically as long as you are sorry for your sin and intend to “fix” your problem, it’s all good. If you confessed only to be able to take communion and then go back to fornication again, then your confession is invalid anyway. (not that I think you’re doing this, just for clarity’s sake.)

If you intend to seek convalidation of your marriage, then it seems to me you should have sought out a priest first to discuss that, followed by confession–if you intend to refrain from marital relations until the marriage is convalidated. (If you don’t intend to refrain from marital relations, there’s no point in confession, as the confession itself would be invalid.)

The laws of our Faith are for your protection. It is so important that you follow them. You know in your heart what is right. If your wife does not want to become Catholic and you are living together as husband and wife, you are in a Civil Marriage. I am not sure but I read that this is also true for people who have been living together for a long time-let’s say more than 7 years. I was reading that Pope Benedict XVI is working on some sort of a statement about all this, but I haven’t heard anymore. I did post a thread but have not gotten a response.

Has anyone read anything about this?

nobody hear can judge the state of your soul, that question is reserved for the priest in confession, and that is where you should take it. You already know the church laws on marriage, and only you know your personal situation and how to apply those laws, so go by what the priest tells you. don’t ask anonymous 3rd parties to second guess the priest.

Was your intention to honestly not fornicate anymore? Did you intend to stop all extramarital sex until you fix your marriage situation? Do you believe sex with your wife who you aren’t actually married to is fornication? That is what is key. Your disposition about the sin. Get thee to a priest and rectify your marital situation ASAP.

You aren’t alone in this situation. I’m praying for you to have strength and resolve to fix this.

Is marriage in another denomination truly not recognized by the Catholic Church? I always thought that but recently a woman I work with received an annulment from her first marriage in the Church. However her prospective husband, who was married in a Protestant church also had to get an annulment prior to marrying in the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church does not recognize a marriage outside the Church, then why is an annulment needed?

A Catholic is bound by the canonical laws dealing with marriage. A marriage outside of the chuch without recieving permission is breaking one of the laws. Thus the marriage is not valid. Fairly easily fixed through meeting with a priest though if both spouses wish to do it. Confession for the Catholic, teaching on marriage and then the blessing of the marriage.

The church recognizes protestant marriages because they are not bound by canonical law.
