Hello everyone, sorry if this is the wrong topic to put this under.

Does anyone else buy things made in China? When given the choice to for example spend more to get Made in USA? Is it morally wrong?

I’m sure not all factories in China are sweat shops, and some are probably safe, clean, and the workers are well paid and treated well. The problem is I don’t always know for certain.

For example, there is an item I’m looking at, that’s made in a China, I could spend a lot more, and get an item made in a different country. Like USA, or Japan. But the I could spend less, but made in China. And give extra to the poor, or those who need it. But run the chance of maybe supporting a company that uses sweat shops.

I guess I just wanted to know, should I not buy thing made in China, if I have the choice not to? Do any of you guys buy things made in China?

By the way, I apologize if I come off as scrupulous. I’m just curious.

To answer OPs question instead of attacking OP,

^^ You might wanna broaden your horizons a bit… A LOT OF THINGS ARE MADE IN CHINA ☹️. Your phone, laptop, microwave, TV, underwear?, etc.

It isn’t morally wrong, no. You gotta chill out a little. It is problematic? Yes. But you and I don’t control where companies make products.

It’s economics. If I were the CEO of Apple, I would certainly make my products in China. Cheap labor means better margins for business. Unfortunately, China has proven time and again to be untrustworthy.

Our Lady warned us of “Russia’s Errors” aka communism over 100 years ago. We’re dealing with the effects to this day.

The best alternative facing companies is to move to another Asian country, which, hopefully, they do.

You could try to buy domestic, buy its a miracle if you can buy 100% American LOL. What are you gonna do? Boycott companies? That’s what dumb people do… they think they’re changing things LOLOL. You’re gonna suck it up eventually and buy their products. Let’s be real here…

Buy American, hire American sounds good. Sure the latter is possible, but the former might mean a lack of quality, or not getting products at all! 😦 It’s the way things have come to be.

Yeah, I just don’t really like supporting companies that charge premium prices for items that are made in China. And I think I should use some caution, because some of these items are made in factories where the workers are abused, and paid very little.
But again, I’m sure some of these factories are safe, and the workers are well taken care of. But I can’t be certain.

I agree. They’re trying to increase their gross margins, and therefore EBITDA (which pleases investors).

I’ll be honest, I don’t get all worked up about this stuff. I hand my money over to the company, and buy their product. Besides, I’ve got better things to do than worry where my phone comes from. Why burden yourself because of someone else’s choices (Apple choosing Foxconn to make iPhone, for example…)

Oh they’re safe alright…
Foxconn installs nets to make sure that workers don’t jump to their deaths. Some people can’t take it anymore.

Wanna know something?
this is how china operates…
  1. Keep people’s ambitions low (Communism)
  2. Make them feel like one big family.
  3. Underpay them
  4. Govern them with an Iron Rod.
  5. Make money from Western companies manufacturing.
  6. Build infrastructure.
  7. Rule the world with a Bioweapon
  8. Scream “Racism!” if someone objects to your people’s disruptive behavior.
  9. Kill your own people (You really think china cares about its citizens? They had the 1 child policy, etc. chinavirus is an excuse for them to exterminate more citizens…)
  10. Allow international students (a few of them) to spread communist ideals in America and Canada
I had a roommate from China who defended the communist party on Facebook (someone attacked them for COVID). I immediately blocked him and unfriended him. These people will say “Free Speech, Free Country” and destroy America and Canada with Communism!!

Stay safe, and smart. 🙂

I’m not sure about the coronavirus being an excuse to control population. (Haven’t read much, and don’t feel like I should jump to conclusions like that) But I do disagree with most ways the CCP acts. They have countless human rights violations.

That was a speculation on my part. But I do get most speculations about China right LOL.

Stay safe, bro! 🙂

Yes.

Generally, i would say it is not morally wrong. In China, people will buy things made in USA and these trade deals are made between both countries, presumably to the economic advantage of both parties. However, if you knew for sure that an item was made by slave labor, then it would not be right to support that. I knew a few people from China and from what they say it is not all that bad in China today. None of them really wanted to stay in the USA and all seemed to prefer living in China. One thing they strongly agreed upon was that most of the Chinese restaurants in the USA were not authentic and the food in China was much better than in the USA.

Do you think maybe they said they preferred China out of fear? I’m not saying they did, but maybe there is a chance?

It’s good that the Chinese are buying things made in USA, because if it’s made in USA, you can be pretty confident it’s not made with slave labour.

My problem is that I don’t know which items are made in safe, good factories by well paid, and cared for workers. And which items are made in sweat shops.

No. i don’t think so.

It is the same when you buy things made in USA. And there are questions about buying different types of food. Should you buy meat from the grocery store? Animals are treated horribly at slaugherhouses. It is so horrible that you will be flagged if you post pictures of the horror. That is one reason why many people today are vegans. Is it moral to treat animals in such a way? There are other reasons of course, such as health and environmental considerations. But even then, there is a question as to how food is harvested, for example, it is known that some strawberry pickers are overworked and underpaid. I guess the answer would be to grown your own food.
