My grandmother passed away recently and I have been asked to do a reading at an Anglican funeral service, what does the church say about this?
Thanks

To read the gospel is a good thing. You aren’t giving scandal or abandoning the faith, or receiving communion at an Anglican table, but you are witnessing Christian love and respecting your grandmother’s life as a fellow Christian. You aren’t affirming amother religion, you are affirming Christian and family love.

I have seen Catholic and Anglican priests taking turns to read in services, and if they may do so respecting each others differences and maintaining Christian charity, you also may feel at peace to do so on this significant occasion.

I’m sorry for your grandmother’s death. May God bless her soul, and bless and comfort your family.
Warmly, Trishie

You can if permitted by their Community.

When Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, died, she was Anglican and was buried as such. Her brother (who like most of the family had become Roman Catholic) read a lesson at her funeral.

I’m sure this would NOT have happened at so public and visible an event were it not permitted by both churches.

I don’t see why not. I went to a funeral at a Catholic Church last year for my friends grandfather. The grandfather had actually befriended an episcopalian priest, and, even though he was Catholic, he wanted the episcopalian priest to officiate. However, the family would not allow it, so he just read one of the readings and said a prayer. (not the final condemnation prayer, or the prayer at the entrance of the body into the church, however, he was vested in the eucharistic vestments, of course he did not in any way participate in the eucharist, as it was Catholic)

I see nothing wrong with you reading at your Grandmother’s funeral.

I’m sorry for your loss and I will keep you, your grandmother, and your family in my prayers.

In Christ,

Acalboi
