Should I Pray for a Job?

Hello:

Is it wrong to pray for a job?

Obviously, if one is unemployed or underemployed then it wouldn’t be wrong to pray for the means to support one’s family. That much I understand. Here’s my situation. I’m currently employed, and am able to meet my family’s needs. A position has opened up that I am going to apply for. I think I would be an ideal fit for the job, and for me, it would be the quintessential “dream job.” There will likely be dozens of highly qualified applicants, and–while also qualified–I have maybe a 1% chance of being selected.

I feel moved to pray about this. I wonder if it would be wrong to pray for the job? It feels a little bit awkward to pray for a job when I already have one, and do not need this job to support my family.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your reply. To be honest, I really can’t put it into words. I guess the simplest way to put it would be to say that with all of the genuine suffering in the world, it seems selfish to spend my prayer time on something for me, that–while it would be wonderful for me personally–seems small or even selfish by comparison. Does that make sense? Maybe not. Like I say, it’s hard to put into words.
 
Pray away! I’ll add my prayers for your success too! Good luck with the competitive process!

God loves prayers, and he applies them as he sees fit. The “worst” thing that can happen from praying is grace going somewhere. 😉

Prayer is not a wish list; it is preparation for whatever God wishes of you. That being said, it is proper to pray over major life choices.

Reflect on the story of the Talents in Gospel. We are called to invest ourselves in our work, and produce good fruit. Religion should never been an excuse for turning down work you might excel at.
 
Consider also that Jesus said He came that we might have life and have it to the fullest. It is absolutely acceptable to pray that we are able to use our talents to the fullest; and/or that we “wind up where God wants us to be.” Heck, sometimes where we want to be is precisely where He wants us to be.
 
I like to pray that all the castles in the sky will explode and maybe some will knock out all the trolls in the world,
