Should I receive Communion?

So I was going to put some clothes out on the line and had my hands full, so I couldn’t carry my shoes. I just put them on and walked about 10 metres to our back door.

I’m worried that I might have disobeyed my parents, as there is a ‘no shoes in the house’ rule. Over the years the rule has become a bit more flexible.

Basically I’m going to Mass in an hour and I don’t want to receive Communion in the state of mortal sin. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I should do?

At the time I knew I probably shouldn’t have been wearing them inside, but I had almost no other option. At the time I also thought I was being scrupulous. I think I’m being stupid about it.

Hi Eman resu. … I’m not an expert on the matter… But i don’t think you committed any mortal sin… To me it seems like you disobeyed your parents’ rule by accident… and a mortal sin cannot be done by accident. A person who engages in a mortal sin is one who commits the sin even though he/she knows that such sin is wrong, but still, deliberately commits such sin anyways… So, such sins are premeditated… You obviously didn’t premeditate to disobey your parents’ rule.

God bless you.

That’s sorta the problem. I think I did premeditate it. I definately thought about it and wouldn’t have done it if I thought it was a mortal sin. I also thought I was just being scrupulous. I still feel guilty for some reason.

I don’t think my Dad really cares too much about it, as long as we’re not sorta wearing them around all day.

It certainly was not a mortal sin, as the matter is not grave. It seems to me that there was no sin at all, as you had a good reason to put the shoes on, and you said that the rules are flexible. Surely your parents don’t expect you to ask permission every time you have a good reason to wear shoes?

I don’t think you are being stupid but I do think you are scrupulous. In my opinion what you described is not a sin of grave matter.

Would you say that this rule was a grave concern of your parents? Honoring your mom and dad is a good thing, but just because it’s your parents doesn’t mean that every little rule they give binds you under pain of mortal sin. That doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what rules to break - not at all. We should obey our parents because they are trying to raise us well. And to violate one of their rules is dishonorable (if the rule is not evil itself). However, your parents would not want you living in constant fear of mortal sin by violating any small rule they’ve set out. They want you to want to grow up and be responsible. If their rules are a constant obstacle course for you, then they’d be upset that you’ve missed the point.

For big matters, pray for forgiveness from God, ask for forgiveness from mom and dad, and go to confession.

For small matters, pray for forgiveness from God, ask for forgiveness from mom and dad, and make an Act of Contrition.

If in doubt, ask your priest.
