Should I stay at my current church?

I am about to begin the process of coming into the Catholic Church and have been attending a parish for about 8 months. I love it there. It is the best church I have ever attended. Recently, the pastor announced that several members would be marching in the Gay Pride parade. The next week in the bulletin they had a photo of the previous year and several members were holding signs that said “Catholics for Marriage Equality.” I am really confused. Frankly, this issue is what kept me out of the church for so long as so many of my dearest friends have been gay. Also, my cousin who was a lesbian took her life and my aunt blames the Church. It has been quite a hurdle to climb and I am still a bit shakey, but I feel like God is really calling me into the Catholic Church and I know that the Catechism does not approve gay marriage. Otherwise, I could not ask for a better church. I tried to go to the Cathedral instead last Sunday and I had trouble hearing. I also missed seeing the familiar faces. I just want to do the right thing and I am just a beginner at this. What should I do?

Dear Maile,

The Catholic Church teaches that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. The parish you are attending is definitely out of step with this teaching. I strongly encourage you to join the Catholic Church in another parish. You will eventually make friends in whatever Catholic parish you decide on–preferably one with a good sound system.
