Hi all,

My Professor asked us to do this as part of a quiz in my UF Ethics and Diversity Class: http://www.moralsensetest.com/index.html#slide-5

He is left-wing and speaks of some things like homosexuality very positively, and I am
concerned about whether it would be used for evil (perhaps as a study to justify evil things) and don’t want to cooperate with it and in doing so sin or help evil. I haven’t asked him what the study is or what it will be used for as I don’t want to come across as Catholic. I mean I think I’ll be mentioning my Faith in at least one of my responses; but I don’t want to come across as strange in saying I don’t want to do something because of my Faith or maybe something similar, not sure the exact reasons. I think I fear the awkwardness and really don’t want to go to the effort of examining my reasons too closely.

At the same time, largely out of ego I’d like to do this. I struggle with scrupulosity and am OCD. Am I just obsessing.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jeremiah

I agree, ask him.

And please get help for your OCD and scruples, if you aren’t already. I think this question would best be directed to your Priest and your therapist/doctor, as this issue is affecting your mental health.

Answering questions honestly is not immoral.

If someone uses your honest answers for dishonest purposes, that is not your responsibility. You are only morally responsible for what you can control.

Let’s take a quick hypothetical. Your professor want’s to know what the average person believes. If people of faith refuse to take the quiz, then it will erroneously appear that there are fewer people of faith in the general population. Your refusal to answer may indirectly cause distress to other people of faith when they see the flawed results.

Now let’s say your professor uses your results to highlight how little faith there is in the general population. This is arguably an evil purpose. However, refusing to participate only help’s his case. If the study is otherwise conducted honestly, there is no moral downside to your participation.

This. With combative professors, one should never be afraid to stand on his own position if one can justify it.

In this case, you never even have to justify anything. Just say the truth.
