I received a 50$ gift card for a birthday present a while ago. I used about half of it a week ago and recently filled up my car and thought I had used the other half. However when the lady rung it up it said I had 29$ still left. I told her that that was impossible because I had already filled up my car once. She said “Look, the machine says you have 29$ so you have 29$ on the card.” So do I have an obligation to throw this card away?

spend the money, the store is responsible for keeping track on their computer. you did your best, so just spend it any way that seems good to you. if you wish you could use the rest of the money to buy something to donate to St Vincent de Paul. the market packed some meat with my order I did not pay for. I went to return it and since they had no way of knowing who it belonged to, and were not allowed to put it back in the sale case since it had been outside the store, they told me to keep it. I did, and later donated an equivalent amount of canned goods to St. Vincent.

You should probably go back through your receipts and make sure that you are not incorrect about how mush you have spent. If you are 100% positive that you have used up all the money I say you should probably throw it away. It is still stealing even if the store is the one who made the mistake. Someone needs to make up for the missing money. And I would hate to have to answer for that in end.

Just my two cents!

God Bless,

Monica

If you are sure you have used it up it would be stealing to used it again. Its like you went to a store and they gave change for a $50 when you gave them a $20

maybe you used another credit card last time. I highly doubt you actually used the gift card. Like someone suggested, if you are that worried about it, use the card and then donate that amount to charity.

the chance of their computer miscrediting your card. - 0.0000000000000000000000001%

the chance of you forgetting how much you had on there - 99.999999999999999999999999%

those scanner systems are dumb, they only know what they read. if it says you have $29 on there. you have $29 on there.

Have you considered the possibility that the people who gave you the gift card put more than $50 on it?

Hi,

There should be a phone number on the back so you can call and find out the balance. If it says you have $29 left then so be it.

Yes this is what I think may have happened. And if they paid more than fifty for it and gave it too you.I am sure they would much rather you have the money than they do.

I know when I have given gift cards i wrote the amount on the card that came with the gift. Sometimes I have debated with myself how much to give and then wonder if I remembered right when I fill out the card. I say use the card

No it’s is a 50$ gift card because it says 50$ imprinted on the card. You have to pay 50$ for it. I am positive I didn’t use another gift card because I don’t have any other credit cards or any kind of cards.

Those cards have to be activated and I think at the time they are activated the actual amount that is paid is keyed into the cash register. This is more important than the number printed on it. I think if there is an 800 number on it that they can give you a complete accounting of what the original balance is and what charges were made.

A lot of these cards can also be “reloaded”. It is possible that the person who gave you the card reloaded it. I think it is worth investigating and not throwing away the card based on an assumption.

Speaking of gift cards, here’s another side of the coin to be aware of…

Wal*Mart offers a 3 cent per gallon discount on gasoline at their stations with the gift card, so that’s usually where my husband and I fill up our tanks. One day, we were waiting behind a woman who was in a big hurry. She finished filling her tank and took off and my husband went, swiped his card and proceeded to fill our tank. Now the card my husband swiped had $50 on it and our tank was nearly empty so the card should have been wiped out. But when he finished filling our tank, the receipt showed we had a $30 balance on it. We realized that the woman ahead of us must have had a balance on her card, but for some reason the machine didn’t end the transaction when she was done filling up. We felt bad about it–$20-some odd is a lot of money–but she was long gone and we had no idea there was a balance left on the pump or we would have cancelled it out.

So this is a warning if you use those automatic pay pumps. MAKE SURE THE TRANSACTION HAS BEEN CANCELLED BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF–ESPECIALLY IF YOU USED A CREDIT CARD! It’s easy to tell if you’ve used a gift card because the price jumps back up 3 cents, but machines are not infallible.

BTW, we donated $20 to charity since we couldn’t find the woman and return her money to her.
