Many high ranking people within the Catholic Church have called for her to be excommunicated. Would this be justifed in your opinion or too harsh? Madonna has always been rather controversial during live performances and the Vatican has condemned her. Do you approve of the way in which she, as a well known celebrity, represents her faith or should she be more of a role model and less sexually sinful / provocative? Does her special status as an artist make it less sinful for her to do so as artists often need to be provocative / raise questions ? I have always been a fan of her music (80’s Madonna)

I’m not sure what the criteria for excommunication is. Does she openly disagree with Church doctrine?

She’s been in and out of the Church a few times already (she was all into Kabbala for a while, then she started going back to some Catholic Opus Dei center) and claims to have been excommunicated several times in the past, who knows if it’s true or just her trying to get attention. She’s not a religious leader and has never said anything of substance on the issue of Catholicism, so I can’t imagine why the Church would bother singling her out for extra attention.

Yes, Google.

It appears, according to statements made by her, that she has already been excommunicated way back in the 80’s. So the question transforms into : Did they have a right to do that?

““I always feel some kind of inexplicable connection with Catholicism. It kind of shows up in all of my work, as you may have noticed,” she told Rolling Stone.”

That’s exactly why I thought she is still a member.

Yes, Google.
Google is a search engine, not a source. It can lead to sources that appear on different points of the spectrum in terms of reliability.

This article only makes the claim that in an interview Madonna claims to have been excommunicated 3 times. There is no quotation given of Madonna’s comments here. No specifics are given. No “high ranking people within the Catholic Church” are named.

Maybe it’s true. Maybe it’s not. There is nothing in the article that would lead me to believe that it is certainly true. And there is no evidence that high ranking Church officials are clamoring for her excommunication.

Frankly, it’s between Madonna and her bishop. If a bishop were to formally excommunicate her, he would do so under conditions outlined in Canon Law. So, yes, he would have a right to do that (presuming he was following Canon Law). Did any bishop do that? It’s impossible for us to know, and we don’t really need to know.

Excommunications are published by the Diocese who did the excommunicating.

Her “bad girl” image makes me wonder if she really wanted to be a nun at some point in her life.
