The decision Pope John Paul II made not to allow Altar girls in his Diocese?
What I’m saying is that he gave permission for them to be used. As long as that permission was granted by the late Holy Father I accept it and I believe every decision he makes is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Our 11 year old daughter wants to be an altar girl, I am against it. I guess I’m “old school”, I think it should only be for boys and young men. She has a classmate (also an eleven year old), her best friend who serves at Mass. I’m not sure if our daughter wants to serve Mass because her friend is doing it or because she really wants to. What do you think?
As long as she understands the meaning of what she’s doing, yes, by all means let her. It’s great to get young people to get involved with the Church, but I’ve had too many people in my age group involved who only are involved because of their peers. And that’s fine, but I really wish they knew what they were doing.

No he gave permission for Bishops to give permission for Parish Priests within their Diocese to give permission for girls to become Altar servers.

If you believe that “every decision he makes is inspired by the Holy Spirit” then you believe that his decision not to allow Altar girls in his own Diocese was also inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Friend,

Again, I support his decision to allow those bishop’s and priest’s to allow them. And yes I believe he prayed before making that decision.

So do you or do you not support allowing Altar girls?

After all the Pope doesn’t allow them in his Diocese, that was his decision. And as you have said previously “If one is in opposition to a rule that is decided by the Holy Father are they really in full communion with the church?”. The Holy Father set a rule that Altar girls weren’t allowed, do you support that?

The Holy Father allows Bishop’s and Priest’s to use female altar servers if they choose to do so. So yes I support that decision. I never said that I think there should just be female servers but if he allows them to be used I am fine with that. I’ am not aware of a rule that forbids them in the vatican, but if he says that I support that too. I’m just saying he allows priest’s and bishop’s outside the vatican to use them so I support that decision for the females to be used.

While I can see the altar serving role as being a potential launching pad for the priesthood…when did this become such a focal point at Mass? The Mass is for everyone to celebrate and worship the Lord, not to be the focal point of finding ways for boys to join the seminary, and become potential priests. I mentioned this earlier, that if girls serving was suddenly banned, I would have no issue with it, but there seems to be something wrong with focusing on the altar servers to the point where one is distracted during mass. We are not at mass to pursue vocations…the Mass was given to us all by Christ, to worship Him, and most importantly to have it revolve around the Eucharist…not US. The mass isn’t about what we do and don’t ‘like,’ it’s about Christ.

Read this article from This Rock magazine:
"JUST THE FACTS, PLEASE, ON ALTAR GIRLS"

Very interesting. So there are not supposed to be altar girls at all, then? There are absolutely no documents that permit altar girls? What justification was used for the change, then? :hmmm:

I notice this article is from 1993. Are you sure there hasn’t been any statements regarding this that have come out since then?
Try this from John Paul II instead
Pope John Paul II to Gathering of Altar Servers

usccb.org/liturgy/innews/082001.shtml

It’s a little more current.

Peace,
FAB
This article is more current (2001), but it’s just an address, not a juridical document. JPII addresses the girls that are there, but he doesn’t really say anything one way or the other about the practice of having altar girls. I wouldn’t think that this statement alone would serve as justification for altar girls. The latter half of the webpage with guidelines for altar servers seems to be coming from the USCCB. I would hope that those guidelines are either based on a liturgical document from the Holy See, or that they were approved by the Holy See. Do you know which of these might be the case?
