Should parents be warned that the parish and adjoining school only endorse orthodoxy and strict adherence to sound Catholic doctrine in matters of faith and morals in all aspects of faith and educational development and that no less will be tolerated?

Works for me. No point in claiming yourself as a Catholic if you are not going to except the Truth.

It needs to be done.

No. I think they should give warnings when the parish and adjoining school DOESN’T endorse orthodoxy and sound Catholic doctrine. Parents and parishioneers who financially support Catholic schools should be able to trust children will recieve an authentic Catholic education. No one should be surprised to discover that a Catholic school is actually teaching the Church teachings. But perhaps teachers and anyone who volunteers with the students should be warned that nothing less than that will be tolerated.

DEFINATELY! The norm should be orthodoxy. You shouldn’t have to warn about it, you should EXPECT it!

Yes! Especially the way parents are now–if they’re told up front, at least they shouldn’t be able to come in/call in and whine about the teacher saying something MEAN and making the poor child feel marginalized. The assumption nowadays is a mellow, mushy niceness so the school should warn the parents ahead of time to save a lot of headaches later.

Can. 812 “Those who teach theological disciplines in any institutes of higher studies whatsoever must have a mandate from the competent ecclesiastical authority.

“The mandatum is fundamentally an acknowledgment by church authority that a Catholic professor of a theological discipline is teaching within the full communion of the Catholic Church … All Catholics who teach Catholic theological disciplines in a Catholic university are required to have a mandatum.”
usccb.org/bishops/mandatumguidelines.htm

I agree, this ought to have never been required. However, I think it ought to be better enforced, and expanded to the educators of our children claiming to be Catholic institutions of learning. Think of it as an “accreditation” from the Diocesan bishop.

I don’t think parents should be warned, but they should be told. That way there is no possibility of the parent who may be a cultural, cafeteria or even a protestant looking for a better education for their child, to complain “I didn’t know”.

No Catholic schools in my area at all:crying: But when I joined a homeschool group, all members were required to sign a statement of faith, the apostles creed. Did not want to sign? Go find a different group. Don’t want your child taught that? Go to a different school.

I think it would be a good way to ensure continuity for teachers and students by preventing kids from being removed from the schools due to disagreements.

JMHO.

God Bless,
Maria

I don’t know if it would be called a warning, but the school administrators should make the school’s adherence to the Catholic Faith explicit. The parents should sign an agreement saying they acknowledge and understand the Faith their child(ren) will be instructed in, and that the parents have read the school handbook (for extensions of the above: uniforms, conduct in the classroom, etc.). Thanks and God Bless.

I ditto the above.

In a perfect world, saying that a school is Catholic should mean that it doesn’t even have to be said–dissent from Catholic teaching is not acceptable.

Since that’s not quite the case, I guess we’d have to go along with inclusion of an explicit statement that children will be taught true Catholicism in the handbook and require parents to have signed off on handbook before the child is admitted, and something to the effect that paid staff could be terminated and volunteers … um, ‘unvolunteered?’ Looking for a term to succinctly state that volunteers who openly dissent would find they were not welcome to volunteer where they might encounter the school’s children.

Up here in Portland, there is a school that does such a thing. Everyone is enthusiastic until it says “including the teachings on contraception and abortion”. Then it goes south. Needless to say, enrollment isn’t sky high, but the kids there are getting a classical CATHOLIC education! 🙂

Pope Benedict would be proud! 🙂

Marian Latin in St Paul. They are currently trying to figure out the financial possiblities of moving into a closed elementary school in Portland. That’s the last I heard from a teacher I know.
