Should priests talk about NFP/ABC in their homilies a bit more?

I have never written on a forum before but I thought I should

ABC is not permitted by the Church as it frustrates the primary end of marriage - that is procreation. Once an act is embarked upon it should reach its natural conclusion - possible conception and not be frustrated. ABC would be seen as interferring in this act and is therefore often and rightly termed unnatural. It goes against the natural law.

The basic teaching of the Church in this area is that married couples be open and positive to life - procreation is the primary aim of Christian Marriage - mutual help of spouses being a secondary aim.

Marriage is a state that was raised to sacramental level by the Church - such was Christ’s esteem for the state - infact our whole understanding of the relation between Him and the Church is made analogous the relationship between a bridegroom and a bride.

Please be open to children - new Christians extend God’s kingdom
Please pray for me

I’m 19 and have been going to the same church all my life and never heard our priest talk about NFP or ABC! 😦 I went to a catholic school in high school, and during our sex ed class it was mostly about protection and ABC, maybe the instructor mentioned the calendar method once very quickly but that’s it. I didn’t even know what NFP was before joining this forum!

I definitely think that priests should talk about NFP and ABC in their homilies, or at least, like whatevergirl suggested, leave pamphlets or posters with information. :yup:

I dont know about them talking about it in their homilies - other than just to say that ABC and even NFP without grave reason is considered wrong by the Church. It is delicate subject matter - but they should definitely give out some brochure and have people invited to some evening class.

I am in my thirties and am Irish and whilst I have always known ABC was not permitted by the Church I know it is widely practised amongst married Catholics in my country. We did get sex instruction in school but there was little to no mention of ABC in marriage - they focused more on the prohibition on premarital sex.

I have often thought that purity is a virtue that is perhaps too often considered from its negative side ie what it is not. But what is it really? I read somewhere and I thought it was very well put - no one should touch another intimately unless their hands were consecrated for that purpose - i.e. a husband or wife. If purity in marriage is seen in a more holistic manner perhaps we all would understand it better. We are all called to be pure according to our state of life chastity expresses itself differently in each state. One thing I have noticed is that those who have lived purely or who have recovered purity seem to have something in their expression - the pure can see God in a way.

I am sorry I am rambling …I just think it is a subject that touches us all and we are bombarded by a highly sexualised culture all around us and we are all, I think, affected by this.

*no, you’re not rambling at all…I enjoyed your post. Thank you. *

Good topic and good discussions !

One hopeful area in getting the truth out to more persons would be Family Apostolates that would primarily be an intercessory prayer group for the parish family , under the priest - a start up group of few families nominated by the priest, that can come together for a period of adoration and discussion that include the priest , held every other week or so .

The larger parish family is informed of this group , of their activities and invitation for involvement from others - both as helpers and in need.

Families that are going through difficulties are also invited to join in the intercessory prayer time.

Often , the priest alone is the one they feel comortable with to confide in and the priest brings those petitions ( confidentially) to the group.

With the primary focus on prayer , then other areas get to be addresssed , as to what are the sources of blockage of graces or even satanic activity and what are the serious ways that same are afflicting persons, families , cultures !

Chastity , holiness and the power it brings - would it not be one of the best antiterrorism weapons as well as the bedrock of stability and peace in families !

Just as internet and these forums are helping many , as mentioned in the posts , internet could be used more effectively at a parish level too - esp. may be by the Apostolate (and thus less threatening to many ; a good way to esp. keep in touch with the young adults and those who are not regular attendees ! )

In turn, the Apostolate members can also be of help for the priests in their many varied needs and struggles.

May the blessing of the Holy Family and intercession of JohnPaul 11 be with us all !

What a great idea - I really agree that issues like purity affect Satanic activity - lets hope that Idea catches on. Prayer groups led by a priest sound like an excellent idea
