To make a legal bet, one has to go to las Vegas. There is some limited betting opportunities in Oregon and Delaware ( on football parlays only). Of course, betting on horses is pretty much available nationwide.
From a financial perspective, legalizing sports betting nationwide would be a huge boon to local government in terms of generating substantial tax revenues. On the flip side, more people would become addicted sports gamblers and correspondendly, many household incomes would disappear.
Statistics show that there’s already a huge underground and illegal market for making sports wagers. Estimates show that the underground market (facilitated by illegal bookies) generate 97% of the total market. So basically, Vegas sports books only see a small fraction of the sports betting pie.
If people are willing to bet illegally, my take is that there would be a huge market should sports betting be legalised.
As a side question, would it be moral to be in the illegal bookmaking business? Sure, its illegal, but the bookie is not forcing anyone to make that bet.
