Dear CA Apoligist,
My wife and I were married 20 years ago. We were married in the Roman Catholic church, and our marriage certificate is is signed by the two priests who witnessed our marriage.
This is my first marriage and my wife’s second marriage. During our pre cana we informed the priest about my wife’s first marriage, an if we needed an annulmet. He asked us a number of questions and said he would get back to us.
At our next session we were told no anullment was needed, because the church did not recognize my wife’s prior marraige as valid: it was a civil marriage and only lasted six weeks.
Now twenty years later, I am concerned that somehow we should have sought an annullment; however, I also think that if an annullment was needed we never would have been able to marry in the church.
Any comments or light you could shed on this issue would be a tremendous help.
