I think that the way we look at others is far more important than what we think they should wear. It seems like we are so hung up on what each of us thinks is modest or immodest that the real issue gets blurred. I work at a bank and dress code is always a huge topic of contention. Everyone has their own idea of what is acceptable and what isn’t. In one meeting, we actually discused what “properly groomed feet” meant because we are only allowed to wear open shoes if we have properly groomed feet. One person felt this meant dry heels wasn’t properly groomed. Another thought it meant the toe nails needed to be painted. I couldn’t help but think this was extremely silly. I feel the same way when I hear hose vs. no hose or tanned legs vs. white ones discussed. What do those things really have to do with modesty? What difference does see-thru nylon or darker skin tone make?
I guess I feel like delving into skirts vs. pants can quickly and easily lead to judging others or even perhaps creating excuses for lustful looks or thoughts. I used to feel offended or bothered by immodestly dressed people but this honestly just led to my judging them.
I think my energy is far better spent contemplating the true value of others rather than trying to determine the true value of particular pieces of clothing or styles of dress.
