In my examination of conscience, it says that seeking pictures of immodest women is a venial sin. Shouldn’t it be a mortal sin? Here’s the link to my examination of conscience.

This is a very good examination of conscience that I also use.

Few examinations are as detailed or thoughtful in explanation. And in particular, this one lists the mortal and venial sins.

As someone above stated, there is a difference between immodest pictures and a picture containing pornography.

And as I stated, this examination is 10 years old and was written by a spiritual director.

I don’t go online and view immodest pictures and pornography to determine the levels at which the porn industry has advanced. I doubt that this priest did either.

Stop looking when your brain tells you a photo is immodest. Don’t continue farther into the viewing of pornography.

“Immodest” photos of women in 2001 are tame in comparison to the 2011’s “immodest” photos of women freely available on the internet.

I’m not sure you are correct…DH remembers an Internet with no spam blockers, and “immodest women” just would show up in your e-mails. Circa 1995 or so.

If it’s for the intent of lusting after that woman, then yes, it’s a mortal sin. But if you’re not intending to do that, but just putting yourself in a dangerous situation, no it’s venial.

If a murderer intended to kill somebody, but didn’t for whatever reason, it would still be mortal right?

I have a difficult time imagining somebody actively searching out an immodest picture for lustful ends, and then dying but going to Heaven because they simply couldn’t find it in time.

I generally do not use one but I looked around for an online one.

(another good source is to go through the moral section of the Catechism…or Compendium…)

It does not though divide out grave matters from usually venial matters…but most do not…and often for good reason for many things “admit of parvity (smallness) of matter”…which is one reason I do not recommend the one suggested in this thread as I already noted…things listed under “venal sin/imperfection” can be mortal…(and some can be confused into thinking imperfections are sins…and I would add that those who struggle with scruples…should take care in using examines…I know they can tend at times to be a source for such.) and there is some more “personal opinion” aspects there as well.

Examinations of course are largely an aid to spur thought not an exhaustive list so if one gets the Handbook of Prayers (which is nice prayerbook) this one may be helpful. Catholic Answers also sells a good one as I recall. It is good to have real physical books…not just internet and ebooks…(in my imaginary examination of conscience…it is a sin to not have a real book )

Every examine will “limp” of course to some degree…some more …some less so.

There is no difference because they create the same impure thoughts and feelings in the mind and body of the person viewing them. Smut is smut.

It seems that everything is a “Mortal Sin”. Doesn’t that sort of cheapen the words “Mortal Sin?” Shouldn’t we take a deep breath, and tell him to ask his confessor instead of people on the internet?

Rather than asking in a forum that is probably half-populated by people with rigorous consciences or scruples, seek out an orthodox confessor and ask him.

And remember…virtually all offenses against chastity (fornication, adultery, rape, etc.) have traditionally been considered to be grave sins BUT not all offenses against modesty!
