This morning I was watching the Today show on NBC, and they did a special on the Olympics. In that special they said that Catholics come to WORSHIP the shroud of Tourin! As we all know, this is a source of major confusion in the Protestant community…that we worship statues, saints, and all things that are not Jesus. I encourage all of you to email NBC and tell them to retract this harmful statement!

Thanks!

Brad

I guess we have to worship the shroud because there are no statues of Mary around.

The anti-Catholic bias of the American media is becoming breathtakingly blatant.

How idiotic.

It’s not bias. When we see someone kneeling in front of a statue and praying, it’s reasonable to presume thay are worshipping.

Also, the language used to decsribe what people are doing lends credence to that idea. People say, “I am praying to the Virgin Mary,” or " I am praying to St. Jude."

It’s a reasonable conclusion.

It would be reasonable if the act of kneeling, in and of itself, was worship, which it isn’t. Many kneel before kings and other dignitaries, but they are not, ipso facto, worshiping them, but honoring them. Only those who want to think of kneeling as proof of worship think that’s what we’re doing. They ought to educate themselves instead of assuming they know what is happening. This is especially true of the media whose job is to tell us what is happening not what they think is happening based on ignorance, or worse, bias.

I agree people should be educated, but I can understand how kneeling plus prayers plus the statement, " I am praying to Mary," can easily leave one thinking they are educated and there is no reason to pursue it further.

Given the behavior of Catholics in this matter, I’d say the burden of education falls on them rather than the rest of the people.

It is similar to watching a Hindu praying before a statue with an elephant head. How many Christians take the time to educate themselves on what is happening? Most just say the guy is playing to another Hindu god.

Hey, I am with you on all this, but I think that the media has an obligation to say what is actually taking place rather than their interpretation of what is taking place. That is why I am ticked off.

Stay tuned for a month full of media misled “facts” of Italy and the Catholic faith.

Exactly. Besides, how many times have Catholics tried to explain our practices to no avail?

They have an obligation to listen to us/to ask us instead of assuming they know what we are doing, IMHO.

NBC? After The Book of Daniel and ‘Cruxi-fixin’, is it such a surprise they continue to scorn Christianity, particularly Catholism. Don’t bother to defend those idiots! They should be doing their job professionally!

There are two differnt sources of information coming from Catholics. One source says they are not praying to the statue and are not praying to the entity represented by the statue. The other source says, “I am praying to Mary.”

Given the number of people who say, “I am praying to Mary,” it’s reasonable to think many Catholics are actually doing that. Maybe it’s against the rules, but that’s still what they say they are doing. First hand information is very good.

We do pray to Mary, we just dont worship her.

It’s reasonable to equate that with worship. It’s reasonable to stop investigating at that point.

The problem Catholics face is too many of them say, “I am praying to Mary,” instead of saying, “I am praying to God and asking Mary to pass them along.”
