Last night, I found a documentary on YouTube about The Shroud of Turin, which seemed to be absolutely the best and most conclusive analysis I have (in my 50 years) seen about the Shroud’s authenticity. That said, I’m pretty excited about what they came up with, but then I started to think it might be best to speak with some other Catholics about it. Since virtually anything can be faked nowadays, and since we’re talking about YouTube, I’m going to assume there will probably be questions I haven’t considered.

The organization claiming credit for the discovery and the documentary is “THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES OF SPACE REPRESENTATION SCIENCES”, which seems to be an Italian organization that studies photographic techniques, spatial measurements, digital imaging, and so on. Also, while I have no legal training, their analysis seems so forensically cogent - if it all really does add up somehow - I dont see how the Shroud could in anyway be a fake. It almost looks like - if the crucifixion happened yesterday, and the Shroud was admitted as evidence in a criminal investigation - the probability of it being anything but what they are claiming would be beyond a doubt.

But that could be my hopes and beliefs speaking. I’d just like to hear other people’s opinions and/or familiarity with this organization and/or the findings they are claiming.

Here is the link to the 51 min documentary.

Perhaps the biggest reason for asking these questions is because a lot of the claims they are making reveal things about the Shroud we never ever have heard of before… the burial position is foremost, the dressage, the crown of thorns, the imprinting technique, the adornments of the hand and so on - these are all so new… if they are real and in-keeping with the Catholic faith, they seem to say so much more about the crucifixion than I ever knew or could have imagined…

Perhaps I shouldn’t get too carried away before introducing a question as such, but I really was surprised when I saw this…

For those who want to take a look - I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter…

Great! Can’t wait to hear your take on it! 🙂

One thing, though… It’s full of jargon, technique and pictures you have to study, which can be a bit difficult to follow, but it makes sense…

Basically, what they’re saying is, the cloth of the Shroud is a little bit like a pair of worn, faded denim jeans… When you look at faded denim jeans, the more superficial areas of the denim are use-bleached whiter than the underlying dye that remains in the fabric, so you can see the grain of the weave and the stitching…

What their multi-angular, high resolution study attempts to do is to get rid of the superficial weave pattern of the fabric because it actually obscures the clarity of the picture the Shroud contains… Thus by clearing up and interfering artifacts on the cloth’s surface and “extracting” the image - you can see some of the most minute details never before clearly identified… That’s the theory…

But I’ve watched it four or five times now, and it takes some studying to really see what they are talking about… Repetition and review seem to help, along with a few google search on terminology, so you may have to watch it a few times to really get how it all connects…

It just seems like a huge puzzle came together when they explained it all… with all the level of detail, I honestly see no way one could argue it at all…
