I was looking through the ‘Quick Questions’ archive on Catholic Answers and someone asked a question about a ‘Sick Box’. These were used in the past and contained statues, blessed oil, candles and holy water. It said these materials could be used by a visiting priest, or by a lay person for ‘appropriate blessings’. I didn’t think lay people were allowed to give blessings?

A lay person can pray with a dying person while awaiting the arrival of the priest. Can set the crucifix where the person can see it and offer them the use of holy water and light the blessed candles. (unless oxygen is in use)
