Sick of facebook

Deactivated mine this week. I just didn’t feel comfy with the whole concept and I never really got on it. I do like Twitter for fun stuff like when I am watching Notre Dame football (playing badly).

I have a facebook. I go on it almost everyday just to check for any messages, but I don’t ever post anything. The only reason I have it is because I’m school and its easy to discuss homework and such with facebook.
Also, I usually go to someone’s wall (usually the Pope Francis’s page) when I first get on so that I don’t have to see the regular new feed. That seems to help matters.

I use facebook frequently because my husband’s family is in another state and it’s an easy way for family members to communicate, send pictures, videos, etc. I agree the political stuff is annoying and people who use it to spread their political beliefs are downright obnoxious. The good news is that this is a self-correcting problem. Such people are completely intolerant of any disenting viewpoint. After all, facebook is about fishing for affirmation, not expressing truth or reality. All you have to do is reply to their post with a disagreement with their position and you will be immediatly unfriended and will no longer have to deal with the person.

My facebook has been 90% positve. I’ve actually been able to get know one of my cousins so much better than I ever would because we’ve moved away them when I was in preschool and saw them maybe once a year growing up and even far less as adults. I see so many more pictures of friends and their families than I ever would. People put up prayer requests and I do too when needed. My best friend was even able to find her biological dad partially due to facebook which has been a wonderful blessing in her life.

People that post obnoxious stuff or way too frequently I block from my news feed. I’ve unfriended a few who were old classmates that I have nothing in common with. I’ve gone back on facebook to find out dates of when things happened that I had forgotten. It reminds me of birthdays I may otherwise not remember. When my daughter went to Germany with my dad this summer is was great communicating through facebook.

I can pass on on prolife news. Our parish has a facebook page so events either within the parish or outside of it that I may be interested in I get to see. My daughter’s youth group has a facebook so the kids can exchange pics from events, get reminders and stuff and now that she’s a young adult she’s on the young adult page.

Really I don’t have a huge artificial “friend” list. The majority are people that I’m really friends with IRL -and most share similar values so its not a lot of drama.

FB is a tool. If it doesn’t work for you, lose it! 👍
I find Facebook quite a useful way to keep in touch with people. I don’t play any of the games on it, and I don’t post photos on it. I really just use it as a form of electronic communication. I’m certainly not addicted to it.

The ads annoy me. When you delete them you are given options of choosing why you delete them. I feel like saying, “No I’m not deleting this ad because it’s uninteresting, or offensive, or against my beliefs, I’m deleting it because I don’t like adverts, so please desist with this aim of trying to tailor adverts to what I like, because I don’t like any adverts,” but it doesn’t give me that option to tick.

Yes, it is a tool, but I find it a useful tool (even if it is a bit annoying at times) so I’ll keep it.

A program like AdBlock will clear those annoying ads right up. 😃

I’m feeling tired of facebook and media in general. I see an awful lot I don’t agree with in today’s media. After a while it becomes frustrating to try to have a media interest at all so I’m thinking about deactivating my FB page.

Has anyone done this? It’s not really for political reasons it’s more that media in general has made me way too reactive to what other people are doing. I’d like to keep using the net/message boards/etc but I find on FB I’m tempted to waste time posting pictures and etc. it’s hard to express I’m just tired of it. There’ve been threads about this but I’ve thought about it enough I want to try deactivating of the account temporarily and see - that is an option. mostly, I feel that I’ve been very distressed and FB use/media preoccupation has been a part of this, I think it’s been both cause and effect.
Hi!! Welcome to the Generation of ME! Where only my feelings and opinions matter. IF you don’t agree with me I can bully you on FB! 😃

My husband and I got rid of BOTH our accounts. There are some people who do use it for good reasons. For the most part everyone thinks they are a celebrity and can promote themselves on FB.

Initially, we have to admit we got it to be nosey. You know, you want to see what peeps been up to. After that, its appalling. Not many people use it with couth. People no longer have social skills. We have adults bullying other adults, cowards that hide behind the key board.

The funny part is the owner of FB, bought up the homes surrounding his house because he fears lack of privacy!! The man who has taken our privacy away. You can Google people and get there pictures from Facebook without having Face book. And now, company’s are starting to FORCE you to have FB because that’s how you get deals and promotions.

Face book would make me mad too. My friend is a lawyer and she told me how much FB is brought into court. I know TWO people who’s husbands left them for an old flame on FB.

I can see if you use it to keep in touch with Close friends and Family or for Business. Mostly its a delusion so people can think that actually have 300 + friends.

Love,
Jilly

I have been using Facebook since 2007. I have tried to stop. I have deactivated my account several times. I always go back. 🤷 However, Facebook, when used correctly, can be an awesome networking tool. You just have to know how to use it correctly. But it’s easy to become overexposed. Sometimes mystery can be good. Keep them guessing. 👍 Facebook does take that away. But you can meet a few good people.
This is my experience too. If I get overexposed or don’t like what I’m seeing its time to adjust my subscriptions or my feed settings. It helps me keep up with family and friends as well as other writers. I subscribe to a lot of inspirational and religious pages. My Archdiocese and Parish are active and its a great way to stay in the loop on events of interest. As a recent convert my Archdiocese’s page has helped me more than once not miss a Holy Day of Obligation. Facebook is what you make it.

That’s what the “Unfriend” button is designed for. I unfriended all the people that feel a need to post their religious/political views in an obnoxious manner. My FB page is much better without them.
