if the priest is sick or has the flu or something is it okay for him to ask us to take holy communion from the plate rather than recieve it from his hand? i’m sure it wasn’t a theological statement or anything just trying to keep anyone from getting ill.

Self-communication is not allowed for the Laity, but the celebrant may, for a good reason such as this, deputize an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion to minister Holy Communion in his place.

He should have asked another priest, deacon, or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to distribute Communion in his place.

It is not licit for the faithful “to take … by themselves … and, still less, to hand … from one to another” the sacred host or the sacred chalice.

The solution I have seen in the past is if the main chalice is being shared among several people, the priest would intinct for his reception and then deputize an extra EMHC. IF the main chalice is not being shared, he just takes his host, drains the chalice, and then deputizes an extra EMHC

oh no. i thought something wasn’t right. that makes me sad. surely he knew. i’m surprised. i cant receive yet but i’m not sure what i would do if this happened again when i could. i guess i would stay in my seat. :tsktsk:

Our priest was ill a few Sundays ago and he asked for an extra EMHC to help distribute Holy Communion and he sat down.

if he is that sick that he is contagious he should be home in bed and a neighboring priest invited to say Mass, or at the very least sitting in the sanctuary while EMHCs or the deacons distribute communion. this is exactly the sort of scenario where EMHCs were intended to serve (rather than on a regular basis).
