Yesterday at mass, I sat on the second row of one of the sections of chairs. We’re temporarily having mass in our gym while our church undergoes renovation. Well, typically, the folks who sit in the back in the bleacher seats (yes, we’re having to use bleacher seats for overflow) line up and receive first before those in the front rows. Well, for some reason yesterday, the EMHC administered the host to the lone occupant of the first row and then the usher signaled for me to get up and receive. Well, the EMHC was only a step away from my chair and I was confused as to why the other folks weren’t going before me. In all this confusion, I jumped up, briefly bowed, placed my hands correctly for reception as she presented the host, then sorta reached out and snatched it from her as she went to place it in my hands. The EMHC looked at me strangely and I’m sure I turned 15 shades of red! Poor thing was probably worried she’d just given communion to a non-Catholic or something. Oh well, I didn’t drop anything but man, I was more than a little embarrassed.
