What’s the rule of performing sign of the Cross in Catholic?
Is it morally right if we do it without doing formal prayers; for example doing it while asking Lord to bless / protect somebody / something in one sentence in our heart (eg. “Lord please be with her.”)?

I make the sing of the cross:

Before and after prayers
When I have committed venial sins
When an ambulance or fire engine passes
When I pass a church
When I pass a graveyard
When I hear that someone has passed away

Use it whenever you like, there are no set times to use it

And before and after meals. If I’m in public, it’s done discreety unless I see other people at another table saying grace.

Also, if I’m getting myself into a sitution where I feel anxious and don’t have time to offer up a prayer.

I remember going to Mass once with a boyfriend’s family (gosh, that was… 10 years ago?) and they refused to bless themselves throughout the service, as other people did (for example, a the final blessing, etc.) They said that the priest’s first blessing took care of having to “bless” themselves for the rest of the service. (Mind you, these were also the folks who said the Eucharist was a “symbol” so I figured out that they only knew their obligations and not their faith – so this wasn’t going to be a family for me.

The Sign of the Cross… is in, and of itself… a prayer. In fact, it is a powerful prayer… which can be offered very quickly (good to remember, should you ever find yourself in a dangerous situation; may our Good Lord forbid). It is an invocation of the Most Holy Trinity. I make the Sign of the Cross many times, during the day… especially, with use of holy water. And especially, right before bed.

We also make the Sign of the Cross, in public restaurants… before meals. God bless.

There is very good advice in these threads. But to answer your question directly - There are no “rules” to the use of the Sign of the Cross.

It is “morally right” to use the Sign of the Cross not only in the instances you mention but also in all the instances mentioned by the people in these threads.

The only objectionable use I can see is using it in a mocking or irreverent manner. As in mocking catholicism or catholics.

On a quasi-side note…I was taught by a nun in the 4th grade who said that Hulk Hogan was one of the greatest wrestlers EVER because before he entered the ring, he always made the Sign of the Cross. (I don’t even know if he’s Catholic.)

Anyway, that sister passed on a few years ago before the “Hogan Knows Best” reality show came on TV…and she must be turning in her grave to know what a mockery of Christian Love his whole life has become IN SPITE of the Sign of the Cross. But that’s just me.
