Sign of the Cross . .

Hi all-
I was wondering if any of you could answer a question that I have regarding the Sign of the Cross. I read somewhere that Pope Innocent III gave instructions to make the Sign of the Cross in the Byzantine fashion: thumb, middle and index finger together and the last two fingers against the palm, moving from right to left. Why is it that we, Latin rite Catholics, sign ourselves differently? Silly question, but was thinking about it this morning after Mass.

I did not think that there is a right or wrong way. Just wondering why there are different ways to make it?

There are different ways for the same reason that there are about 7 different Rites.
