I mentioned in another thread a very well educated Carmelite’s take on the sign vs the symbol. He explained that a sign evokes a single, cold, dull emtotion. Stop. Slow. Silence. However, a simbol evokes much more. The symbol raises within us a tremendous sense of emotion, and makes us feel more abstract emotions. A symbol of the Church would be the cross. It is merely a rememberence, but it conjures up more profound thoughts and feelings than simply “God.”

The question is thus-how can this be taken a step further to defend the faith? I’ve had some ideas, and also a few answers, but I want your thoughts. Some symbols that many (not all) Protestants disapprove of include: icons of the saints, the saints themselves i.e. their stories, the Mass itself (being much more than a symbol, of course) and numerous other things. A foremost runner in the Catholic/protestant issue is the place of the rosary. “Prayer beads aren’t biblical.” Well, they are. the Our Father, the Hail Mary, are both found in scripture. How can we integrate these numerous facets into one?
