Signing after the Gospel

Can anyone please explain the significance and history by making the sign of the cross on the head, lips, and heart after the announcement of the gospel?

My understanding (and I don’t know where I learned this, so it could be wrong) is that it signifies a desire for God/God’s Word to be “in my mind, on my lips, and in my heart.”
 
The prayer I learned is “May Your Word be on my mind +, my lips+ and my heart+ that I may worthily and fittingly proclaim Your Holy Gospel.”

It is a good reminder that we are all to evangelize.
