So I think it’s great that Neill particularly makes these Sci-Fi films which are very entertaining, thrilling, but they’re really about something. They’re about issues that we really do all need to talk about. “District 9” set in the future was actually about discrimination and all these other things, haves and have nots, so was “Elysium”. And “Chappie” is about you know, nature versus nurture, and all these other things, and here you have this robot ending up being the most compassionate of everyone in the movie. "

So, does Chappie get to vote?

If the fictional character of Chappie was real and was truly intelligent, it would seem to follow that he would have a soul, and would have been created in the image of God, and therefore would have moral responsibilities, and therefore would have corresponding rights. In a democratic system, this would seem to include the right to vote.

That said, for philosophical reasons I do not think true intelligence can be produced by any material system, and therefore I do not think it would be possible for Chappie to have true intelligence except if it was created in the robot by God.

Why would we care what an actress says about AI?

I’ll consider the ramifications of AI when my eyes see it. I was told as a child that in 1985 artificial intelligence would surpass the human mind. 1985!

Why would science spend millions to recreate the human mind in any case, when we ignore the minds in the heads of bodies walking all around us???

I’ve never even heard of Chappie, but I thoroughly enjoyed District 9.

Personally, I doubt one cane be truly intelligent without a soul.

Unlike a computer, I can decide what stimuli to focus my mind on, whether it is the sound of my cat, the traffic on I95, the texture of my clothing on my skin, the slight tickle in my nose, etc. The computer does not have true choice but always selects what its programming codes it to select, even if it ‘self codes’ in a simulation of learning.

In the trailer for the movie the robot ‘Chappie’ says ‘I am alive’ when the fact of the matter is that no, he is not alive. He merely mimics life and that is all he will ever do. The same is true of his form of intelligence.

But if Chappie gets to vote, then Microsoft and its computer making kin can make our elections into a farce, if they are not already.

Why would we care what an actress says about AI?

I agree, people just like hearing what she thinks because the aliens movie was so popular, its like they think they are hearing from ‘Ripley’ and not the person playing her. LOL

Personally, I think within 10 yrs, we will probably make a significant jump in A.I technology, Ive seen some crazy robots DARPA is currently developing, all its going to take is some kind of tech discovery/ invention in the bio-mechanical industry for us to have REAL terminator style robots/ machines. I have a feeling those trying to create these things, they are more or less, flying blind, not really thinking of the negatives of creating such a technology.

They need to keep in mind, once we get there and reach true A.I. there will literally be NO going back, no way to reverse it or hit the reset button.
