Silence and lying

The lying in question happened in RCIA. This week I was sleepy and had a hard time paying attention when the instructor saying was something about baptism and the different types. Than a woman chimed in about her grandchildren, who are growing up in a Protestant household and how she was confident that if they died before they were baptized, they would make it to Heaven even though they were unbaptized. I knew that was wrong but I lacked the strength and courage to speak up about it. I heard that silence, except in grave situations or involving those in authority is not sinful or at least not mortally sinful, is this true? Have I committed a mortal or venial sin in this situation?

Also, on something a bit off topic, I heard that the hosts being offered at the parish I’m currently attending are glutten-free (I plan on going to a different parish sometime later, though I may find the same problems there) is this abusive or is it Ok?

Pray that the woman’s children get baptized and I gain the courage to speak the truth in love.

This was no sin. Here it would properly have been the catechist’s role to correct her, and thus might have been a breach of duty on his behalf. You, however, had no strict obligation in this situation, so don’t worry about it.

She was not necessarily wrong. Don’t go around “correcting” people unless you know what your talking about. You need to just concentrate on staying awake and listening.

Be careful about use of the term lying. A person can be mistaken without intentionally lying. I assume that you are referring to baptism of desire and of blood. Read the Catechism about baptism. The woman may not have been wrong. There is no reason at all to suspect that you committed a sin by remaining silent at the class. We are not required to argue with everyone, at every time, who might be mistaken.

Totally gluten free hosts cannot be used because the host must be of true wheat. Very low gluten hosts can be used. It is very likely that you heard incorrectly.
